Dubuque Speedway opens with Schueller, Busch winners

By Rob Hinckley DUBUQUE, Iowa (June 2) – The track came to him. That is what Jaden Fryer wanted Sunday evening at Dubuque Speedway. The Freeport, Ill. pilot shot from the outside front row and held off track champion Bryce Garnhart and NASCAR and dirt legend Ken Schrader to win the Merfeld Brothers Automotive IMCA Modified 20-lap feature.  “This was really special,” Fryer said in C&W Trucking/Hoker Trucking/Kam Koncepts Victory Lane. “It was fun getting the win and we worked hard.” Fryer and his team dedicated the win to a friend recently lost to cancer and had the car wrapped in her memory. Garnhart shot off seventh and quickly moved to the high side, but could not run down Fryer. By Jerry Mackey DUBUQUE, Iowa (June 17) – Sunday night racing action returned to the high-banked 3/8-mile dirt track on the Dubuque County Fairgrounds on Fan Appreciation Night.  The final feature of the night was the Merfeld Brothers Auto IMCA Modified event. Austin Moyer shot to the front from his second row start, immediately took to the high side of the track and went on fight off the constant challenges from Matt Gansen to score the win in the 20-lapper. Moyer took the checkers a couple of car lengths ahead of Gansen. Mark Schulte made a late-race charge to take third.  The Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature was in doubt right to the checkers as Jason Roth was able to overcome K.C. Ansel on the last corner of the 18-lap event and nip Ansel by a few feet for the win. There was emotion in the winner’s voice.  Jeremiah Hurst has won many, but the season championship at his hometown Dubuque Speed­way is always special.  Hurst started eighth but made his run to the front quick, taking the point for good on lap five and won the Eichman’s Bar & Grill IMCA Late Model 25-lapper Sunday evening at Dubuque Speed­way. “It’s always special to win here,” Hurst said. “We’ll just keep winning.  The finale had to go to overdrive/overtime as runner-up Joel Callahan slammed the turn two wall and finally stopped on turn four as the white flag was ready to fly.  Hurst beat Jeff Tharp, Eric Pollard, Nebraska’s Cory Dumpert and Donnie Pataska on the green, white, checkered finish. “That (car) thing was digging holes off the turns,” Hurst said. “I knew I had to get to the bottom when I saw (Pollard) on the bottom.
