Shryock Holds Off Albertsen in Kossuth County Stock Car Duel

ALGONA, Iowa (Aug. 6, 2026) — The Koppen/Harken/Hovinga Memorial Fair Race highlighted Thursday night’s program at Kossuth County Speedway, with each feature winner receiving a six-foot trophy. The evening also included the Kossuth County Hall of Fame induction, honoring Bruce Wickman, John Pletcher, Timmy Sidles, Stacy Mills, the Algona Fire Department and Algona EMS.

The Sunoco IMCA Stock Cars produced the night’s most entertaining feature as season point leader Kelly Shryock and Mike Albertsen waged a classic battle over the final 10 laps.

Shryock grabbed the lead at the drop of the green while veteran racers Albertsen and Kevin Opheim kept the pressure on. Cautions on laps five and nine slowed the pace, but Shryock remained in command at halfway with Albertsen, Opheim and McCain Jennings in pursuit.

Albertsen spent the closing laps glued to Shryock’s rear bumper but came up just half a car length short at the checkers. Jennings completed the podium ahead of Opheim and Zayn Feaster.

Chris Palsrok and Carson Reinig each advanced six positions to share Hard Charger honors. Chad Palmer, Albertsen and Palsrok captured the heat race victories.

The victory was Shryock’s ninth EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Region win of 2026 and his fourth at Kossuth County Speedway this season.

Baca Cruises to Another Modified Victory

Pole sitter Chaz Baca Jr. led from the outset of the Karl Kustoms IMCA Modified feature despite an early caution and only encountered trouble when lapped traffic closed the field in the final circuits.

Jeremy Mills finished second ahead of Nick Meyer, while Brandon Beckendorf advanced from 10th to fourth to earn Hard Charger honors. Mike Jergens completed the top five.

Matt Looft and Jayden Larson won the heat races.

The Mesa, Ariz., native who now calls Jewell home earned his 14th IMCA Modified victory of the season, 11th in the Razor Chassis North Central Region, and third at Kossuth County Speedway in 2026.

Nielsen Rallies to Hobby Stock Fair Race Win

The 22-car Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stock feature featured multiple lead changes and cautions before Brandon Nielsen emerged victorious.

Corbin White paced the opening six laps before Doug Wickman took over on lap seven. Nielsen grabbed the lead on lap 10 and survived a caution shortly afterward to lead the final four laps for his sixth career Kossuth County fair race triumph.

Doug Wickman finished second ahead of Tim Sidles, White and Will Smith.

Chris Krug charged from 16th to sixth to earn Hard Charger honors. Steve Wickman, Jade Lange and Tim Sidles collected the heat race victories.

Nielsen’s win was his eighth B&B Racing Chassis Northern Region victory of 2026, with four coming at Kossuth County Speedway.

Tacheny Repeats in SportMods

Jacob Tacheny made it two straight Karl Kustoms IMCA Northern SportMod victories at Kossuth County Speedway by leading the opening eight laps and holding off Jared Boumeester in a spirited duel over the final six circuits.

Boumeester settled for second ahead of Josh Appel, while Mike Smith charged from 14th to fourth for Hard Charger honors. Jacob Korte completed the top five.

Appel and Tacheny won the evening’s heat races.

The victory was Tacheny’s second straight triumph and second consecutive Kossuth County Speedway win.

Nielsen wins Weishaar Memorial race

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 20, 2023) – Brandon Nielsen was the big winner of the $1,000 Jess Weishaar IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock Memorial race held Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway. Aaron Rudolph and Josh Sidles brought the 22-car field to flag stand to take the green flag in the final race of the night as they raced for the $1,000 first place check in honor resident and race fan Jess Weishaar, slain in a 2019 bank robbery. Burns earns first career feature win

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (July 16) – James Burns won his first career feature race to highlight an exciting night of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday. The big night of racing drew another nice crowd count of 104 cars filling the pit area looking for a tune up for the upcoming Salute to Veterans show. Burns took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature holding off a late challenge from Brandon Nielsen. The Al­gona driver was racing with a heavy heart as his grandmother had passed away earlier in the day and in a victory lane interview, dedicated the race to her.  Jay Sidles grabbed the early lead before an early caution. Jennings wins again at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (June 22, 2023) – McCain Jennings was not to be denied his third visit to victory lane this season at Kossuth County Speedway, when IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars took to the oval at Algona on Thursday night. Wayne Landheer was the early leader as a great battle played out over the first half of the race with Donovan Smith and Jennings contending. Landheer kept his no. 2 rig out front until five laps remained, when Jennings became the new leader. He then went on to capture his third win of the season at Algona as the race went green, white, checkered. Smith crossed the finish line in second place as Landheer was third. Cody Knecht led the first three laps before Jeremy Mills took over the lead and went onto his second local Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature win of the season.
