Karl Chevrolet founder Carl Moyer passes at 83

ANKENY, Iowa (Sept. 28, 2024) – Carl Moyer, founder of Karl Chevrolet and a long-time supporter of IMCA, IMCA race tracks and IMCA racers, passed away Saturday at the age of 83.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Survivors include his wife, Penny, sons Brad and Bret and daughter Pam.

The Des Moines native worked at dealerships in Cedar Falls, Winterset and West Des Moines before starting his own in Ankeny. Moyer bought out his brother to start Karl Chevrolet, then a one-car showroom in Ankeny, in 1978.

While hard work, a knack for marketing and making the customer “Your dealer for life” have kept the dealership in the top three percent of Chevrolet dealers since, Moyer is also remembered as a huge advocate of Ankeny and every community he had a dealership in.

Karl Chevrolet also holds the record for being named the top certified used car dealership in General Motors 13 times. Moyer continued to expand the business in the last eight-plus years, according to the news release from the company.

His auto group includes 10 companies and more than 800 employees across Iowa who take The Karl Way to heart.

Moyer was also a race car driver and founded the Dirt Truck Racing Association. The Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck Series had 12 dates at seven Iowa tracks this season.

2024 was the 26th season of IMCA sponsorship season for Karl Chevrolet, the Midwest’s number one Chevrolet and GM Certified Dealer, and Karl Kustoms, the Midwest’s high performance parts manufacturer and distributor designated as the Preferred Engine Supplier of IMCA Racing.

“Carl Moyer and the Karl Companies have been instrumental in the growth of IMCA, notably our Northern SportMod division and Super Nationals,” said IMCA President Brett Root. “Our thoughts are with his family and many friends at this time.”
