Becerra breaks Brown win streak at CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 19, 2023) – IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing was held on a blustery mid-May Friday night at the 4/10-mile dirt track, CJ Speedway. A solid field of drivers were on hand to provide another entertaining night of racing in five IMCA divisions. 

The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds saw CJ Speedway regular Jarrett Brown have his recent win streak come to an end at the hands of Carthage, Ill., driver Austin Becerra. Brown took the lead early but could not hold off Becerra, who had started the feature in the 10th position. Becerra took the win ahead of Brown and Dakota Simmons. 

Matt Lundry led the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature for several laps before ninth starting Logan Anderson took over the top spot. Anderson held the point for a few laps before 12th starting Dylan VanWyk shot into the lead with a slick move off of turn two.

VanWyk has been a frequent visitor to the FOCO Victory Lane in 2023. VanWyk scored the win ahead of Anderson and Shane Paris.

Unfortunately the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner was determined in the tech area. Apparent winner Matt Picray was DQ’d after post-race inspection found an illegal shock on the right rear of the car. Dustin Griffiths was awarded the win with Nathan Ballard and Michael Jaennette rounding out the top three. 

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks put on their usual two- and three-wide racing feature. When the checkered flag flew it was Calvin Dhondt making his way to FOCO Victory Lane for the second consecutive week. 

Dhondt got to the front early and held off eighth starting Eric Knutson for the win. Knutson was able to catch Dhondt on several occasions but settled for second at the finish line. 

Kolby Sabin has been a regular at CJ Speedway in 2023, racing in the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact class. Sabin makes the tow from Des Moines and has been a front runner on several nights. Sabin visited victory lane after racing to the checkers ahead of late-closing Christian Grady.

California Kid scores big win at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 15, 2022) – Racing action returned to the CJ Speedway on the Louisa County Fairgrounds in Columbus Junction following two consecutive rainouts. The wet conditions on the grounds made for a very high speed racing surface on Friday night. The fans were treated to a very nice Fireworks display courtesy of Patriot Fireworks following the racing action.   The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature ran as the headliner of the night with a strong field of 20 drivers taking the initial green flag for the main event.  Matt Mayo from Bakersfield, Calif., is spending time in Southeast Iowa racing out of the Shane Paris shop in Muscatine. Mayo took the lead from Matt Lundry and went on to score his first victory since arriving in the Hawkeye State. The feature was only slowed for one minor caution after lap one was completed. CJ checkers fly for McDaniel, Roth

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 22, 2022) – Friday night racing action at the CJ Speedway saw two more drivers add their names to the first time winners list in 2022 at the Louisa County Fairgrounds oval.  Jason McDaniel has raced on and off at CJ Speedway but had not won a race on the 4/10th mile dirt track since the 2018 season. McDaniel led the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature flag to flag en route to the win.  The feature went under caution late and the restart saw the top five positions shuffled as Kirk Kinsley took advantage of the restart and raced into second and was closing in on McDaniel as the checkers waved. Deery Brothers Summer Series returns to CJ Speedway for July 18 show 

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa – An absence of more than 22 race seasons comes to an end next Wednesday, with the return of the Deery Brothers Summer Series to CJ Speedway. Touring IMCA Late Models last traveled to Columbus Junction for an April 12, 1996 show won by Rick Wendling of Hazleton. They’ll vie for $2,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start when they’re back in town on July 18. “This has been one of the events that we’ve really been looking forward to since the schedule for the 32nd annual series was announced,” noted Tour Director Kevin Yoder. “A lot of our series drivers have never raced at CJ before, or have never raced there in a Late Model, and I know they’re looking forward to next week.” Pit gates and the grandstand open at 5:30 p.m. on race day.
