Rhodes sprints to IMCA RaceSaver win at Winchester

WINCHESTER, Va. (April 29, 2023) – With most of the Eastern race tracks raining out, the return of IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars to Winchester brought a good field of sprinters to the Virginia oval co-sanctioned by the Virginia Sprint Series and Laurel Highlands Sprint Series. 

Zach Rhodes topped the 24-car main event for his first win in the sanctioned division.

Heats kicked off the night with Donnie Hendershot, A.J. Barton, Jarrett Rosencrance and Dave Grube taking wins. The feature lined up with Rhodes and Fred Arnold on the front row. 

Rhodes had the best line at the start with Arnold dropping in for second right away, as the rest of the field tried to get their own line working to move forward. Rhodes liked the bottom and stayed glued to it with Arnold and Logan Jones fighting over second with the other positions changing every lap. 

Jones made his way to second and Arnold fell to third with Donnie Hendershot and Dave Grube trying to run them down. Jones was all over Rhodes for the top spot but close to the end Rhodes built a little of a gap and held it as he flashed under a waving checkered flag.

Jones and Arnold rounded out the top three.

Austin Greenland topped the 11-car non-qualifiers’ feature.

Next week the Virginia Sprint Series is off before heading to the coast and Dixieland Speedway in Elizabeth City, N.C., for the first Fast Friday race of the year on May 12.

Shenandoah checkers are VSS second straight for Harris

(Sept. 17, 2022) – Jerald Harris made it two Virginia Sprint Series feature wins in a row Saturday night, following his run to the checkers at Natural Bridge Speedway with the Saturday checkers at Shenandoah Speedway. The feature-only event had Caleb Harris and Bill Rice leading the field to green, with Rice out first and Harris closing in a couple laps while bringing Billy Hubbard along with him.  Rice had a good line and kept them off until lap eight when Jerald Harris went high and made the pass stick. Hubbard kept working on Rice to make sure Harris didn’t get away and got a big run to second as quickly as he could. Hubbard gets first RaceSaver win in VA Sprint Series opener

(April 10) – Billy Hubbard has raced stock cars for many years and after stepping into an IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car last year he has been a quick study, sweeping Saturday’s opening night Virginia Sprint Series show at Shenandoah Speedway. Matt Mullins and Hubbard paced the field to green with Hubbard out front first and Mike Keeton hanging close with Jerald Harris getting to third quickly. Hubbard showed lap after lap the car was working as Keeton kept the pressure on and Harris stayed within striking distance of both as the race wore on.  Keeton gave it a final push as the laps were winding down but it would not be enough as Hubbard flashed under the checkered flag for his first win in a Sprint Car after many wins in other divisions. At the line it was Keeton, Harris, Bill Rice and Mullins making up the top five. Next week it’s the first dirt race of the season at Natural Bridge Speedway on Saturday, April 17.

Duke wins Clinton County PASS battle

(July 26) – Ken Duke Jr. emerged from an intense, nearly race-long three-car bat­tle to win the 25-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car event co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sprint Series and Laurel Highlands Sprint Series Friday at Clinton County Motor Speedway.  Duke took his sixth PASS event of the season and third at Lock have. Most of the race was a dogfight between Duke, polesitter John Walp and outside front-row starter Dylan Proctor, with Proctor leading the most laps but all three drivers taking turns at the front.  After Duke, who had started third, grabbed the lead for the final time, Walp spun and had to re­start in the rear.  That enabled sixth starting Jack Frye to move into third but he was unable to challenge for the lead.
