Baca regroups, races to Eggstravaganza checkers

SOMERTON, Ariz. (April 9, 2022) – Saturday’s IMCA Modified main event at the Cocopah Speedway Easter Eggstravaganza got exciting when Chaz Baca didn’t want it to.

After catching Ryan Roath for the lead and working his way through lapped traffic, the two-time defending Shaw Race Cars Western Region and track champion nearly lost the handle with eight circuits remaining in the $1,000 to win feature.

“It was definitely a get your heart rate going thing,” Baca said after the near disaster. “Luckily we were able to regroup the last few laps and finish it off.”

The checkers were the sixth of the season for Baca, already Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible.

Russell Allen was the runner-up and Roath ended in third. 

Bo Partain topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature in front of Baca and Jake Nelson. Shelby Alves also notched win number six of the year in the IMCA Northern SportMods, chased across the stripe by Miles Morris and Ty Weidner.

D.J. Werkmeister paced the Mach-1 Sport Compacts with ninth starting Jaxon Sanchez and Ryan Brooks rounding out the top three.

The biggest winner of the night moneywise was Thomas Daffern, who pocketed $400 for the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victory plus the $931 bounty on Bobby Horton.

Horton was the runner-up and third was Joshua Cordova.

First Arizona shows for Wild West Tour see Baca, Hibdon top IMCA Modifieds at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. (March 19-20) – The first visit to Arizona by the Pitt Stop Motorsports Wild West Tour saw two IMCA Modified drivers race to career-first tour wins at Cocopah Speedway. Defending Shaw Race Cars Western Region, state and track champion Chaz Baca topped the Friday show, then ran second to Kollin Hibdon under the Saturday lights at Somerton. Both feature events on the opening weekend for the 11th annual tour paid $1,000 to win.  Baca started on the pole Friday, tangled with Hibdon racing for the lead near midway and went on to lead all 25 laps. Darrell Hughes II was second and Steve McCollough third.  “It was definitely a good way to start the tour. Dotson repeats, rookie Richards earns first SportMod win at IMCA.TV Winter Nationals

(Jan. 7) – Round three of the 2022 IMCA.TV Winter Nationals presented by Yuma Insurance saw Ethan Dotson make a fast return back to victory lane at Cocopah Speedway. The quick Californian made the most of long green flag runs in winning his second IMCA Modified feature in as many nights, leading all but the first of 25 laps en route to another $1,000 checkers. Josh Cain paced the field on lap one before the defending Winter Nationals champion, already eligible to qualify for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational, drove by. Arizona native Tim Ward got second, with third going to home state hotshoe Zachary Madrid.  Car count topped 220 for the Friday show at Somerton. Peckham prevails while Ward, Horejsi win again at IMCA.TV Winter Nationals

By Ben Deatherage SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 6, 2023) – Two drivers who had been there and done that did it again Friday night at Cocopah Speedway. Tim Ward and Jim Horejsi repeated their winning ways from Wednesday with IMCA.TV Winter Nationals victories, Ward in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds and Horejsi in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Ward was a beast in the 25-lap, $1,000 to win Modified feature after obtaining P1 on the opening circuit. Things got interesting at midway when lapped traffic helped Chaz Baca catch up, but Ward made like a rocket following a lap 23 restart and couldn’t be caught. Cody Laney powered his way up to second while Baca ended his night in third. Curt Lund, Dylan Thornton and Zachary Madrid all battled at the front of the Stock Car field.
