Out of the field, Strothman wins on the track at CJ

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 18) – On a warm sultry night, racing action went on at the CJ Speedway with a quick racing program being run just before rains moved in at the Louisa County Fairgrounds.

The headliner of the night was the 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature and on Friday night it belonged to Corey Strothman. 

The C4 of Strothman started on the front row and was never seriously challenged as he raced to the win. The action behind Strothman was hot and heavy as several drivers took their turns racing in the second position. When the checkers flew it was Adam Bell crossing under the checkers in second ahead of Kirk Kinsley and Shane Richardson.

Strothman stated in victory lane, “We are finally caught up on the farm so it is now time to start racing.” 

Brandon Banks chased down early leader Kyle Madden and took the lead in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature and went on to score his second feature win in a row at CJ Speedway. Once Banks cleared Madden, he went on to score an impressive win in the caution-free main event. Jarrett Brown got by Madden late to take second with Madden running third. 

The Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature saw a first-time visitor to the CJ Speedway victory lane for the season. 

Young Tyler Heckart makes the tow from Ottumwa on Friday nights to race CJ and the ride home on Friday would have been enjoyable following his feature win. Heckart shot to the front in the early going and went on to hold off CJ hotshoe Logan Anderson for the win. 

Cody Staley came from deep in the field in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts and scored the 12-lap feature win. Staley was able to move by race leader Alex Hayes late in the race to capture the win. Hayes finished second ahead of Christian Grady. 

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main event saw current national point leader Daniel Wauters pad his lead with another win. Wauters had to move by his team partner Dan Kessler in route to the win. Wauters used a high line pass in turns three and four to garner the lead and cruise on to the win. Kessler ran second ahead of Jared Miller.  

Racing will continue at the CJ Speedway with another action packed night of racing in all five classes on Friday, June 25. The hot lap session will hit the track at 7:15 p.m. with racing to follow.

CJ Speedway opens 2023 season with packed house 

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (April 14, 2023) – The racing season at CJ Speedway opened Friday and 93 race teams competed in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd on a beautiful night for racing.   The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds took the green flag for their 20-lap main event with a strong field of 18 drivers taking the initial green flag. Steve Gustaf Sr. took the lead from the pole but his time at the front was short lived as Drew Janssen used the very fast high line of the track to take the lead.  Janssen went on to pick up the win but it was anything but easy as Jarrett Brown applied pressure late in the race as lapped traffic came into play. See saw win by inches in IMCA Stock Car thriller at CJ Speedway 

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 23) – Another beautiful Friday night greeted a great crowd as the racing action was very exciting at the CJ Speedway. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars continue to provide great racing each and every Friday night. The main event took the green with Kenny O’Donnell taking the lead and looking to break a recent string of bad luck at his hometown race track. O’Donnell stretched the lead out early in the race and appeared to be on his way to the win only to have Jason See make a late-race charge to the front. See went to the outside of O’Donnell as the two came off of turn four headed to the checkered flag. At the finish line, See took the win by no more than 12 inches over O’Donnell, who led all but the last few feet in the 16-lap feature. See, Kile top winners at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 23) – After two weeks of no racing due to the heavy rains in the Columbus Junction area the CJ Speedway returned to racing action on Friday night.  The night featured Bike night for the kids which saw well over 40 kids leave the track with new bikes or scooters thanks to a long list of donors to the CJ Kids Fan Club.  The racing action was highlighted by the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Scott Jordan led before eighth starting Jason See was able to take the point position. See was challenged late by David Brandies, who had started 10th. The two raced several laps with See holding off he constant challenges of Brandies. The final lap saw Brett Lowry shoot by Brandies for second as See took the win. A post-race incident saw Brandies DQ’d and relegated to the final position on the lead lap. Tad Payne was scored third ahead of Pat Rachels.  The IMCA Modified feature win went to Kurt Kile.
