Strassheim, Boles earn first Lee County wins of season

DONNELLSON, Iowa (Aug. 7) – Matt Strassheim and Mitch Boles both raced to their first feature wins of the season Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway.

Strassheim and Ron Boyse made up the front row for the IMCA Sunoco Late Model main. Strass­heim took advantage of his starting spot by jumping out into the lead over Mark Burgtorf and Boyse.

Burgtorf overtook Boyse for the runner-up spot and went to work on Strassheim. Burgtorf followed in Strassheim’s tire tracks but wasn’t able to mount a challenge for the lead. Tommy Elston was third, Denny Woodworth was fourth with Boyse rounding out the top five.

Boles and Levi Smith led the IMCA Modified field to green with Boles taking the initial lead. On lap four, Daniel Fellows moved into the runner-up spot, and one lap later Michael Long, who started ninth, took over third.                                                                                            

Those two drivers chased Boles over the next 10 laps. Coming to the white flag, Long was able to get the runner-up spot from Fellows and then challenged Boles on the final lap. Boles held off Long to score his first win of the season at the track. Fellows was third, Dennis LaVeine came from 10th to finish fourth with Burgtorf rounding out the top five.

John Oliver Jr. was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner and Austen Becerra paced the Karl Kus­toms Northern SportMod main event. Jason Ash collected the Mach-1 Sport Compact checkers.

Simmons scores first career IMCA Modified win

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 10) – Dakota Simmons raced to the first IMCA Modified victory of his career Friday at Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Levi Smith and Simmons led the field to green in the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, with Sim­mons grabbing the early lead. Simmons started to pull away from the rest of the field before the first and only caution appeared on lap eight. On the restart, Simmons jumped back out front with Bill Roberts Jr. and John Oliver Jr. close be­hind. Oliver got past Roberts on lap 10 but by then Simmons had built up a straightaway lead. Coming to the white flag, Oliver had cut Simmons’ lead down to about three car lengths but that was as close as he could get, as Simmons went on to claim his first career Modified win. Lee Co. Drive For 5 IMCA Late Model win pays Elston $1K

By Brian Neal  DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 11) – Tommy Elston drove to his first local IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature win of the season Friday, in the latest installment of Lee County Speedway’s Drive For 5.  Elston caught up with the back of the field late in the contest but neither Nick Marolf or Mark Burgtorf could deny him the $1,000 checkers. Elston and Jay Johnson drew front row starts for the 25-lapper and Elston took advantage of his spot up front to lead lap one over Nick Marolf, who had started sixth and then quickly used the high side of the track to get to second.  When Marolf got beside Elston five laps into the event, the leader moved up top to take the line away. Next Drive For Five qualifier is Friday at Lee County

DONNELLSON, Iowa ­– IMCA Sunoco Late Models and IMCA Modifieds both race for $1,000 to win in their next Drive For Five qualifier this Friday at Lee County Speedway. The June 25 feature is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier for the Modifieds. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts are also on the card. Pit gates open at 5:30 p.m. and hot laps are at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors 60 and over, $5 for students ages 11-17 and veterans, and free for kids 10 and under. Pit passes are $30, or $20 for kids ages 7-13, $10 for kids ages 4-6 and $5 for three and under.  The Friday show at Donnellson will be broadcast by DoneRight.TV.  The track website is www.leecountyspeedway.com.
