Lee County Drive For 5 schedule adjusted

DONNELLSON, Iowa – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that took all of April’s and most of May’s scheduled race events at Pepsi Lee County Speedway, promoters Brian and Marcie Gaylord have announced several schedule changes to the Drive For 5 program for IMCA Sunoco Late Models.

There will still be five $1,000 to win feature qualifying nights to help set the stage for a potential $5,000 IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 payday in mid September at the track.

Four of the qualifying nights will take place on weekly Friday night events, on June 12, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 21, with one qualifying night on Saturday, Aug. 1. Drivers who compete in at least four of those events will be eligible to run for a top prize of $5,000 in the Saturday, Sept. 12 finale. 

Shottenkirk Parts Express, local sponsor of the division, is the title sponsor of Drive For 5 as well. Other sponsors include Ideal Ready Mix, J.J. Nichting Company Case IH, Floyd’s Waste Systems, Triple Seven Trucking, and Triple R Performance Engines.

IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Iowa State and track points will be awarded at the June 12, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 21 qualifying night shows. National and state points are at stake at the Saturday, Aug. 1 qualifying night and in the finale on Saturday, Sept. 12. The finale race pays $2,000 if the winner competed at three or fewer qualifying night events. 

Pits at Donnellson are open all day on Fridays. The grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. and racing follows 7 p.m. hot laps.

Rain interrupts Lee County’s Friday show

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Friday, August 4, 2023) – Lee County Speedway beat Mother Nature early, then had to try to beat her again once the program got started on Friday night during the final qualifying round for the Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5. Before Mother Nature cut the program short, two and more than half of another feature were completed, with all three drivers familiar to victory lane. First to take to the track was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature, with Kevin Koontz and Peter Stodgel scheduled to be on the front row. But when Stodgel had to be pushed from staging, Chad Krogmeier moved to the outside of the front row for the start. Krogmeier took advantage of this to jump out into the lead over Jeremy Pundt and John Oliver Jr., who started eighth. Hanna, Becerra top opening night Drive For 5 features at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 7, 2022) – Veteran Chuck Hanna and rookie Austen Becerra were IMCA Drive For 5 winners, while Dylan VanWyk took Drive For 3 honors at Lee County Speedway. All three earned $1,000 for their Saturday night efforts, Becerra’s checkers making him Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible as well. The 25-lap IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5 feature opened with Dustin Schram and Hanna leading the field to green. Schram led lap one, only to have Hanna power past to grab the top spot on lap two. The first and only caution of the race appeared on lap three and on the ensuing restart, Hanna jumped back out front with Denny Woodworth taking the runner-up spot. While Hanna set the fast pace out front, ninth starting Tommy Elston used lapped traffic to move into second. There was no catching Hanna, however, as he went on to claim the win. Woodworth tops Drive for 5, Profeta wins career first feature at Lee County

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 23, 2023) –  Dennis Woodworth won the headline race and Nicholas Profeta won for the first time Friday at Lee County Speedway. The 25-lap Iowa Corn Growers Association Drive For 5 IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature took the green flag with Woodworth and Nick Marolf on the front row. Woodworth edged Marolf to lead lap one over Tommy Elston. While Woodworth worked the bottom of the track, Marolf work the top and used the momentum off the top of turn four to edge ahead on Woodworth on lap four. Marolf pulled away from Woodworth before encountering lapped traffic on lap 12. This allowed Woodworth to close back in. Woodworth used lapped traffic to slip back by Marolf for the top spot on lap 16, only to have Marolf get the lead back on the next lap.
