Lyons takes promoter’s post at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. – Three IMCA divisions will run weekly this season at Cocopah Speedway, under the direction of new promoter Benji Lyons. 

Friday and Saturday point shows run through Sept. 14 and feature IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. 

“This facility is probably one of the top 10 in the country,” Lyons said. “This is a racing town and the people here really support this track.”

Sixty-two loads have been added to the 3/8-mile oval with another 40 or so coming before opening night.

Modifieds at Cocopah are part of IMCA’s Larry Shaw Race Cars Western Region. Hobby Stocks are in the Big Daddy Race Cars Southern Region.

“I like the stability of IMCA,” Lyons said. “I’m not in the rules enforcing business and I’m not in the business of reinventing the wheel. I’m in the racing business and sanctioning with IMCA means I don’t have to take my attention away from putting fans in the stands.” 

Cocopah first sanctioned with IMCA in 1990. This season will be the ninth consecutive year the track has been IMCA.

Braaksma schools IMCA Modified foes for second Winter Nationals win

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 10, 2024) – A driver who learned a lot last season taught his Friesen Performance IMCA Modified foes a thing or two Wednesday night at Cocopah Speedway. Ethan Braaksma raced to his second $1,000 IMCA.TV Winter Nationals win of the season, taking advantage of a late restart and leading the last six circuits in the 25-lap main event at Somerton. “It’s crazy,” Braaksma said. “We didn’t have a real good year last year. Five win features, five wrap up titles on final night of IMCA.TV Winter Nationals 

By Ben Deatherage SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 14, 2023) – Five IMCA drivers won feature events and five more wrapped up IMCA.TV Winter Nationals in the Saturday night finale at Cocopah Speedway. Chaz Baca topped the rain-delayed but caution-free Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event, earning $1,000. Career win number 88 for the defending track and state champion, already Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational qualifying eligible, came ahead of Brady Bjella and Brandon Beckendorf. Tim Ward’s 10th place run was just enough to give him the Winter Nationals title. Veterans Curt Lund and Mike Albertsen tussled ‘til midway of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car headliner, before Dylan Thornton motored by.  A late-race restart gave Thornton a clear track ahead and he sped to his second $750 checkers in as many nights. Cochrun gets confidence boost and $1,000 from IMCA STARS Mod Lite win at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. (April 10) – Californian Kaden Cochrun got a big confidence boost and a check for $1,000 for his fourth straight IMCA STARS Mod Lite win in Arizona. The national points leader pocketed a grand for his Saturday Yuma Auto and RV Night victory at Cocopah Speedway. He’d started ninth, passed A.J. Whisler for the lead on the fourth circuit and led to the end of the 25-lapper. Cochrun led by almost a straightaway before the green, white, checkered finish. J.D.
