Weekly success at Cocopah has Toth confident before first competitive trip to Super Nationals

HOLTVILLE, Calif. – Chris Toth crewed for Lance Mari and Jason Noll when he made his first trip to Boone Speedway last September.

He’ll bring his Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod along when he returns with MRT Race Cars teammate Mari for the 33^rd annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

“Last year was the first year I went and I crewed for Lance and Jason. I was really impressed with the number of people that were there and all the racing,” Toth said. “We talked about it on the way home and I decided I would bring my car this year.

The Holtville, Calif., driver has run a limited schedule this season, with three feature wins in 11 starts at home track Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, Ariz. He’s the point leader and eligible to qualify for the BSB Manufacturing Race of Champions.

“When we first started this class at Cocopah, we were getting eight or nine cars. Now it’s closer to 20,” said Toth. “I feel good about going to Boone. I would be happy to make the qualifier either night. To make the Saturday night main event would be the ultimate goal.”

Toth ran a pure stock and then a Modified before expense in general and two blown engines the same weekend prompted him to convert the car to a Northern SportMod.

He also won three features last season and ended with a couple satisfactory showings in his two Duel In The Desert qualifiers at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“I really enjoy the open wheel classes. The SportMods are fun to drive and they’re economical,” Toth said. “Around here, we’ve got a bunch of cars that can run up front. They’re competitive and that’s what I enjoy most about this class.”

He’ll enjoy racing more often and against more cars in upcoming seasons, as more Arizona tracks phase out similar classes and sanction the IMCA division.
