Mulder collects Antioch checkers

ANTIOCH, Calif. (June 20) – Paul Mulder won an exciting 20-lap Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event Saturday at Antioch Speedway. It was his first win of the season and came ahead of IMCA national point leader Fred Ryland.

Chuck Golden raced into the early lead and traded the front spot with Ron Brown following a pair of early restarts. Fred Ryland was tasked with working his way back through the field after a separate incident; Patty Ryland was briefly in the lead before getting sideways and falling to third.

Golden stayed with the inside for a lap 10 restart, but he slipped back to third as Mulder and Watsonville ace Matt Hagio motored by.

Fred Ryland soon made it a three-car battle up front. Mulder led through a pair of quick caution flags, the second of which negated a Hagio pass for the lead on lap 15.  Ryland managed a low pass for second on lap 19 but could only chase Mulder across the stripe.

Racing returns this weekend for the two-day Summer Nationals event. NASCAR Star Kenny Wallace will drive an Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified on both nights. The Modifieds will race for $1,500 to win on Friday and $2,500 to win on Saturday and both events will be Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifiers.

Northern SportMods will also get extra money with Friday’s feature win paying $500 and Saturday’s win paying $750.
