VINTON, Iowa (June 7) – Troy Cordes returned to familiar territory Sunday night at Benton County Speedway.
The Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified veteran earned his first win of the season on the quarter-mile to bring his career wins total to 103. Forty-seven of those victories have come in weekly racing in Vinton, which leads all drivers in the division at the speedway.
Zach Less took the lead from Jerry Dedrick following a lap four restart and then pulled to a straightaway lead while Cordes was mired in traffic.
Cordes was able to work his way into third by the time the caution flag waved again with four laps to go.
When racing resumed, Cordes raced the top groove to the lead to drive to the win ahead of Less and point leader Kyle Brown.
With the win, Cordes has now earned at least one Modified victory in each of the last 14 seasons in Vinton – the longest such streak in division history at the speedway.
Another all-time leader in wins on the quarter-mile, Damon Murty earned his 72nd Vinton win in the 18-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main.
Murty also ran the top groove to steal the lead after just one lap. He survived a pair of stoppages to take the win ahead of Nathan Wood and Justin Stander.
Murty has now won at least four Stock Car features in Vinton in each of the last 11 seasons.
IMCA Hobby Stock point leader Nathan Ballard drove to his fourth win of the season in that 15-lap feature.
Ballard passed race-long leader Bill Bonnett on the final circuit to take the victory ahead of Bonnett and Justin Wacha.
Tony Olson raced to his second straight local win in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature.
After using multiple grooves to race into third from a fifth row start, Olson swept to the outside of Kyle Bentley to take the lead for good on the fifth of 16 laps.
Olson took the checkers ahead of Curt Hilmer and Austin Kaplan.
