BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 4) – David Smith impressed in winning Wednesday’s first qualifying feature for Stock Cars at Boone Speedway.
Brandon Czarapata amazed in winning the second.
Top four finishers in both events will advance to the inside row of Saturday’s IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s main event.
Smith raced from the 18th starting spot to top the opener ahead of Mike Nichols, Bob Daniels and Jeff Tubbs. Czarapata started way back in 28th and raced quick and clean to the front on the 24th of 25 laps. Donavon Smith, Jay Schmidt and Abe Huls completed that top four.
Two-time Super Nationals champion Brian Irvine and Dustin Larson threatened to run away from the field in the first feature, but their run way up front ended on lap 14 when Larson guessed how Irvine would run turn three and guessed wrong.
The two made heavy contact, Irvine had to restart at the rear and Larson was directed to the pits.
Daniels led for a single circuit before Smith took over. Nichols caught Daniels for second on lap 21. Tubbs held off Shaun Bruns and John Heinz for fourth while Irvine raced back to seventh.
Two quick yellows preceded Donavon Smith’s moved to the front in the second qualifier.
Also a two-time Super Nationals Stock Car king, he put on a clinic after catching up with the back of the pack and working his way through a pack of eight cars before the final caution on lap 19.
Schmidt and Smith swapped the lead twice after the restart. Czarapata completed his long drive to the front with two to go.
Wednesday’s qualifiers bring a wealth of Saturday night experience to this year’s main event: Schmidt has now qualified 11 times, Czarapata, Nichols and David Smith each nine times and Donovan Smith seven times.
Huls will make his second main event start while Daniels and Tubbs each make their first.
