Cordes, Grady sweep championship night honors at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 22) – A number of close points battles were finally settled as champions were crowned on the final night of racing for the 2021 season at Benton County Speedway. Troy Cordes and Cristian Grady made the most of the finale by locking up track titles with season championship feature wins on the fast, smooth, multi-grooved, quarter-mile Bullring. Features were lined straight-up based on season point totals, allowing those in contention for track titles to settle things from the front row. And in four of those divisions, margins of four points or fewer separated the top contenders entering the final night. From his pole position start, Cordes quickly made his move to the top side while fellow front row starter and championship contender Dylan Thornton gave chase in the KISS Country 96.5 IMCA Modifieds. Cordes extended his advantage while Thornton tried both high and low to reel in the front-runner. He distanced himself in lapped traffic and built over a straight-away lead to secure the win and track title ahead of a hard-charging [Read More]

Stewart scores first Benton County Speedway victory

VINTON, Iowa (Aug.15) – Points battles remained tight Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. With the season championship program coming up next Sunday, drivers positioned themselves for a title run in the final event leading up to the season finale. In the KISS Country 96.5 IMCA Modified division, a first-time winner had to hold off a hard-charging title contender in that feature. Derrick Stewart raced from the fourth row and worked along the outside of Josh Barta a handful of laps into the 20-lapper. While Stewart pressured from the outside, point leader Troy Cordes, who also started in row four, pursued on the low side. Cordes reeled in the lead pair and the trio dueled before Stewart was able to make his way around Barta for the race lead. Cordes continued to give chase and made numerous attempts to challenge high and low, but those efforts came up short as Stewart raced to his first-ever win at The Bullring. Cordes ran second ahead of Dylan Thornton, who ended the night trailing Cordes by four points [Read More]

Carter cashes in on another big payday at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 1) – When big money is on the line, Cayden Carter is the man to beat.  Already the winner of the Urbana 5 Memorial last month, Carter picked up $1,250 Sunday night in the KISS Country 96.5 IMCA Modifieds during Autism Awareness Night at Benton County Speedway. From a second row start, Carter pursued Tommy Belmer and Chris Snyder at the onset of the 20-lapper before working his way into the lead.  Carter built a straightaway advantage while Troy Cordes raced the top side into second from a fourth row start. Cordes cut into the sizable deficit and was able to stick his nose to the inside of the race leader in the final set of turns, however Carter held on to take top honors. Dylan Thornton raced from the fifth row to finish third with Mark Schulte fourth and Jerry Dedrick fifth. In addition to the pair of special shows Carter has won this season at The Bullring, he also won the Urbana 5 Memorial in 2019, the season-opening Frostbuster in [Read More]

Five familiar faces find victory lane at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (July 25) – With the weekly points battles entering the final month of the season, drivers who’d already experienced success this season at Benton County Speedway made return trips to the winner’s circle Sunday night at The Bullring. Although it had been nearly two months since his most recent win on the quarter-mile, KISS Country 96.5 IMCA Modified driver Troy Cordes showed why he’s the point leader in the 20-lapper for that division. From a third row start, Cordes worked the top side into contention and past early race leader Jesse Belez prior to the midway point. He then set sail to drive to his fifth win of the season ahead of a charging Dylan Thornton. Jeff Aikey, Derrick Stewart and Mark Schulte completed the top five. Dallon Murty continued his mastery in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars presented by Albert Auto Service. From a mid-pack start, Murty took just a few laps to race into the lead and build over a straight-away advantage in that 15-lapper. Meanwhile, Texas visitor Shelby Williams raced [Read More]

After scouting out fast line, Becerra banks biggest check at Benton County’s Urbana 5

VINTON, Iowa (July 11) – Watching the IMCA Modified feature from his vantage point in staging gave Austen Becerra a pretty good idea where the fast line would be for his own main event Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. The Carthage, Ill., visitor made his way around the high side of The Bullring, leading all 20 laps of the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature for a $2,200 Urbana 5 special payday.  “Sitting in staging, I could see Cayden Carter running the top side and thought that was going to be the place to be,” said Becerra, winner of the 2018 Hogan Memorial in one of his earlier, rare visits to Vinton. “I had no idea how much we were ahead of everybody else. I just ran my own race, never felt any pressure and just got into my own rhythm.” Becerra had started outside the front row and led Californian Kaylin Lopez, defending race winner Brayton Carter and Logan Anderson to a lap nine caution.  Carter took over second on the restart; another yellow [Read More]
