Super Nationals-bound Herrera sets winning pace at Price

By Janelle Bates PRICE, Utah (Aug. 20, 2022) – Payce Herrera won both Friday and Saturday Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact features at Desert Thunder Raceway. He brought home the $1,000 grand prize sponsored by the Desert Thunder Raceway Foundation. Torrential downpour and brief flooding postponed Saturday’s races but the crew at Desert Thunder worked tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly. The young Herrera was not deterred. The busy eighth grader ranks first in Utah state point standings and  Saturday’s trip to victory land marked his 11th win of the season. “I felt pretty good winning this weekend,” he said. “It was fun and exciting.”  Earlier this month, Herrera completed pre-registration for the 40th annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s at Boone Speedway in Iowa. “I feel good about going to Super Nationals. I have wanted to go since I was little,” said Herrera, who turns 14 two days after the Sept. 6 Sport Compact program at Boone. “I have been working all summer to achieve this goal.”  Herrera is a third-generation dirt track racer [Read More]

Marathon man Ryland wins long race to checkers at Dwayne Melvin Clash

MEDFORD, Ore. (Aug. 20, 2022) – His off-track training regimen had Fred Ryland in shape for Saturday’s Dwayne Melvin Clash.  Ryland started on the pole and led the distance in the 69-lap marathon for Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods at Southern Oregon Speedway.  “Luckily I hike and run a little bit. That really helped a lot,” the Brentwood, Calif., speedster said following the career-topping $3,000 payday. “It was hot and we spent a lot of time in the car on Saturday. We drank a lot of water when we could.” The Clash, stopped at lap 30 for a fuel-only break, was the longest on Ryland’s career by 19 laps. “The cautions were spread out just right and kept us from getting into too much lapped traffic, and I was able to pull away some on the restarts,” he said. “Ryan Peery challenged on the outside. I just did my thing and kept hugging the bottom.”  Fellow Californians Peery, Tyler Rodgers and Kenny Shrader finished two, three, four. Hard charger and hometown hotshoe Mike Medel was [Read More]

Travels take James to victory lane at Southern Oregon’s Rayburn Classic

MEDFORD, Ore. (Aug. 19, 2022) – His latest finish in a self-described “pretty dang good year” also turned out to be a Friesen Performance IMCA Modified career-best payday for Bricen James. The much-traveled James banked $5,500 for his win at Southern Oregon Speedway’s 55-lap Bruce Rayburn Classic. The checkers were his 10th of the season, with those wins coming at seven different tracks in three states.  “We kind of went everywhere this year. We’ve chased the big races around here and have won a lot of them,” said James, who piloted a Jerry Schram-owned ride with his own Rage Chassis on the trailer and ready for the next-week tow to Iowa. “It’s been a pretty dang good year for us.” He’d started the main event from the 11th spot and was running in the top five when lap 10 was scored.  After a fuel-only stop at midway, James caught Collen Winebarger for third and then Nick Trenchard for the runner-up spot. Another role for Jesse Barnhill in return to Boone Speedway, IMCA Super Nationals

MILTON, Fla. (Aug. 24, 2022) – Jesse Barnhill attended his first IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s last year, in the roles of driver’s dad and crew chief. When he returns to Boone Speedway, he’s hoping to add a new title: Big Dance qualifier.  The champion of IMCA’s Gulf Coast Region in 2004 and father of 2021 Dirt Works Eastern Region rookie of the year, Barnhill brings his own Friesen Performance IMCA Modified to the 40th annual Super Nationals with an absolute best case scenario of joining son Owen in the Saturday night main event.  “We hope to make the big race and put on a good show,” said Barnhill, who already has the 1,100 mile trip from Milton, Fla., mapped out. “It would mean a lot to both of us. Making the main event is our ultimate goal. We’ve waited all season to go to Boone.” Two Florida drivers have qualified for the Super Nationals Modified finale, Jimmy Balkcom in 1987 and Curtis Galbreath in 2000. Both Barnhills know the challenge they’ll face [Read More]
