RPM Speedway fans give back during Community Giveback Night

HAYS, Kan. (April 13, 2024) – Planning that began last fall came to fruition Saturday night at RPM Speedway. Fans attending the first race of the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season at the Hays, Kan., track donated enough non-perishable food items to fill five grocery carts and part of a sixth to the Ellis County Community Assistance Center. Those Community Giveback Night donations will be distributed to those in need served by the center, located in Hays. “Almost everybody has been in the position where they needed a little help,” said RPM promoter Chris Sutton. “It was very, very encouraging to be able to give back like this to the community that supports us.” Sutton had helped with similar projects while announcing for Paul Dutton at Hutchinson Raceway Park. A proponent of making every race night “an event,” and came up with Community Giveback Night while penciling out his 2024 schedule. Fans donating four cans of food got in for $5 while those donating eight cans got in at no additional cost. “Our fans really stepped up [Read More]

Things kicked off with the Mod Lites and their 15-lap main event. As the race went green, it was Josh May holding down the top spot but that didn’t last long as Clem took over at lap three. From there on, it was Clem’s race as he raced home to the checkers with hardly a challenge. Lemke, Larson, Franzen, LaMar are All Star Night winners

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 13, 2024) – The Darkside Promotions All Star Night welcomed over 100 race cars on a warm Mid-April evening on Saturday night. The race hungry fans were treated to an exciting night of racing.  Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds saw Illinois un-retired driver Scotte Lemke pick up the win. Lemke was a fixture at Tri-State tracks in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s before sitting out for 16 years. The veteran showed he still is to be reckoned with as he led all 30 laps in route to the win. Jeff Larson applied pressure in the early going and it appeared the friends were going to provide a thrilling race but Larson was sidelined with tire failure as the race passed midway. Dan Roedl and Drew Janssen applied the heat to Lemke in the latter half of the main. At the checkers it was Lemke scoring the win ahead of Roedl and Janssen.  Larson was given the opportunity to drive Lee Kinsella’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and gave the 21 [Read More]

IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars have nine Friday dates at Lakeside

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (April 12, 2024) – Ralph Palmer got some seat time in a Sprint Car “years ago” during his own racing career. This season, the new Lakeside Speedway general manager will get to watch the IMCA RaceSaver class run on nine Friday nights at his Kansas City track. “I think the 305 Sprint Cars will fit in well here because they’re affordable and they’re always fun to watch,” said Palmer. “We have guys from Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska who want to race here, and even some from Arkansas who have said they’re interested in coming up.” First night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season will be April 19, with race dates following on May 17, May 31, June 14, July 5, July 12, Aug. 2, Sept. 13 and Sept. 20. Duke adds Keystone Challenge to IMCA RaceSaver resume

By Frank Buhrman PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 6, 2024) – Drew Young and Doug Dodson seemed ready to settle the 12th annual Keystone RaceSaver Challenge between themselves; third-running Ken Duke admitted he had nothing for the leaders. Then, with two laps to go in the River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series’ biggest race of the year Saturday at Port Royal Speedway, both Young and Dodson slowed with flat tires. Duke admitted he broke out in a smile when he saw that had happened. He had the lead, but he had veteran Roger Irvine, 2023 PASS points runner-up Zach Rhodes, Jeffrey Weaver and high-riding Nick Sweigert on his bumper for the restart. Known for strong restarts, Duke didn’t flinch, but then he had to do it again after Rhodes brought out the caution with yet another flat tire with one lap to go. No matter. Duke’s second restart was as good as the first, and the two-time PASS champion and 2019 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Ca national champion again held off the challenges and returned to victory [Read More]

Morris throws shade at STIMS opponents

By JM Hallas PLEASANTON, Texas (April 6, 2024) – Solar Eclipse Eve, Eve. I-37 Speedway roared back into action less than two days away from the Total Solar Eclipse. An omen perhaps? The inaugural South Texas Friesen Performance IMCA Modified Series race on I-37 Speedway’s ¼-mile, semi-banked, dirt, oval was a barn burner with Chris Morris running down Ryan Doyon in the final laps. Morris and Doyon exchanged slide jobs with Morris edging out Doyon at the checkers and Rick Green third. As green waved on the feature it was polesitter Doyon getting the point ahead of Morris, Jacob Hortch, Cody Leonard and Jared Maupin. On a lap three restart, Leonard got by Hortch for second while Greg Dinsmore, who started out back, made his way past Chris Carroll before another yellow. Once back to green, Doyon got quickly away, while Dinsmore got shuffled way high on the back stretch and fell back. Maupin’s run in the top five ended on lap eight when he had trouble and slowed. Doyon and Morris got away clean [Read More]

Huish reigns at Dodge City’s Sprint Car Nationals

DODGE CITY, Kan. (April 6, 2024) – First he won the king of the hill. Next, Jeremy Huish reigned over the inaugural Sprint Car Nationals at Dodge City Raceway Park. Huish led all 30 laps from the pole Saturday night, collecting the $5,000 IMCA RaceSaver checkers ahead of Conner Thomas and Steven Richardson. “It’s very, very cool to win the first one at Dodge,” said Huish, who’d put his name on another exclusive list by winning RaceSaver Nationals last September. “I heard Conner early but the track was very fast and you could catch up with (the back of the field) very quickly.” He pulled away after the last, late restart and won by about a straightaway. The win by Huish was his third in four starts dating back to last fall in the Steve Cranston-owned Maxim ride previously piloted by Luke Cranston. Thomas and Richardson had won qualifying features on Friday night. Danny Wood and Koby Walters rounded out the top five in Saturday’s main event. Other feature winners on Friday were Steven Swarthout [Read More]

Braaksma wins again, Richards ends dry spell at Boone Frostbuster

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (April 6, 2024) – The winning continued for Ethan Braaksma while Rod Richards saw a dry spell end in Saturday IMCA Frostbuster action at Boone Speedway. Braaksma raced to his sixth Friesen Performance IMCA Modified victory of the young season and another $1,000 payday at Iowa’s Action Track. Richards, meanwhile, earned $750 for his first IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers since 2019. Also the Thursday Frostbuster winner at Stuart, Braaksma opted for a higher route around after watching the Stock Cars use the lower line in their Saturday feature. That strategy paid off as he’d catch Todd Shute for the runner-up spot seven laps in and then passed pole starter Jerry Flippo on the 10th circuit. “We were able to get out to a decent lead after that. There was a caution with about 10 laps to go and I knew I had to get a good restart,” said Braaksma, aware that Dylan Thornton was on the move behind him and worse yet that his right front tire was going flat.
