Smith continues Cocopah success with second Winter Nationals Modified sweep

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Feb. 14-15) – Different weekend, same results. Dylan Smith returned to Cocopah Speedway to complete his four-race sweep of Winter Nationals, earning $1,000 for his Friday night IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified win and $3,000 for the Saturday checkers. He’d also gone south to Somerton to win $1,000 features on Feb. 7 and 8. “On Saturday I matched the total I won the first three races at Cocopah so it was a pretty good night,” said Smith, who will spend part of that bounty fixing his hauler, which broke down last Thursday in Arizona. “We raced with a lot of good guys down here. I hope we can keep winning races when we start racing at home in Nebraska.” Smith won from seventh starting on Friday and from 10th on Saturday. The victories were his IMCA career 91st and 92nd. Smith sweeps Winter Nationals IMCA Modified features at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Feb. 7-8) – Despite his lengthy record of success, Dylan Smith has never started a race season quite like this. Smith swept weekend IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified Winter Nationals features at Cocopah Speedway, earning $1,000 for each of his Friday and Saturday night victories. “It’s a great way to start the season,” said the former national champion and defending IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s king. “I’ve never won right out of the box like this before. Sobbing ends Thornton’s series streak in Canyon finale

PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 1) – Two weeks of ups and downs ended on the upside Saturday night for Jesse Sobbing. Sobbing beat Ricky Thornton Jr. to the $1,000 checkers by half a car length in the sixth and final Winter Challenge Series feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Canyon Speedway Park. The victory was the first of the season for the Iowa traveler, runner-up in national standings and the top rookie driver in the division in 2013. Thornton gains point lead with 4th Winter Challenge Series win

PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 31) – Ricky Thornton Jr.’s latest Winter Challenge Series feature win at Canyon Speedway Park came with a bonus. Along with a fourth consecutive $1,000 prize, Thornton gained the top spot in point standings for the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series Friday night. “The season started off way better that we thought it would,” he said after catching Tim Ward for the point lead. “Hopefully we can keep hitting our setup.” After returning to the sixth starting spot, Thornton was quick to shoot to second behind Chris Olexiewicz. Thornton tops third straight Winter Challenge Series feature

PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 30) – The folks at Bank of America in his hometown of Chandler have seen a lot of Ricky Thornton Jr. lately. Thornton deposited the $1,000 proceeds from his third straight Winter Challenge Series victory after a back-and-forth IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified battle with Tim Ward Thursday night at Canyon Speedway Park. “I’ve been fortunate once to win nine in a row but never against the caliber of drivers I’m racing against now,” said Thornton, who kept the same setup that helped him to Jan. 25 and 26 victories. Consistent Williamson leads Winter Challenge Series point race

PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 29) – Jason Noll and Ricky Thornton Jr. own IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature wins but consistent Jesse Williamson has the top spot in the point standings following the first three Winter Challenge Series shows at Canyon Speedway Park. Williamson, from Coburg, Ore., finished third, fourth and then second in series events Jan. 24-26. Gilbert’s Tim Ward has yet to finish outside the top five and is just a single point off the pace. PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 25-26) – Ricky Thornton Jr. admitted that he missed on his setup for Friday’s Winter Challenge Series opener at Canyon Speedway Park. Unfortunately for his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified foes, he was right on the mark Saturday and Sunday, topping both $1,000 to win feature races. “We were too loose on opening night,” said Thornton, who’d previously piloted the ride borrowed from Anthony Madrid for the Duel At The Desert at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last November and then for the Jan. 19 Snowbird Classic show at Arizona Speedway. “We thought the track would stay more tacky Friday and finished 11th but we hit our setup the next two nights.” After starting third on Saturday, he snuck into the front on the second set of turns and led all 25 circuits.
