Williamson tops IMCA Wild West Tour opener at Southern Oregon

By Ben Deatherage WHITE CITY, Ore. (June 13) – Jesse Williamson took a big first step toward his career third Wild West Modified Shootout title by winning the opening night feature Saturday at Southern Oregon Speedway. Williamson grabbed the top spot and seemed to have the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified field covered before things got a little interesting toward the end. Several cautions kept the field bunched but Williamson stayed out front and took the $1,000 checkers, his tour career seventh. Jerry Schram was second and defending Shootout champion Alex Stanford was third. Collen Winebarger and Nick Trenchard completed the top five. Williamson, champion of the 2012 and 2013 Shootouts, was already a candidate for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Forty Modifieds from half a dozen states vied Saturday. The Wild West Modified Shootout heads south for its only race in the Golden State of California on Sunday, June 14. Yreka’s Siskiyou Motor Speedway hosts the second of seven tour stops. Droste delivers memorable win at Independence Motor Speedway

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 13) – It was a storybook night for Budweiser IMCA Late Model driver Tyler Droste at Independence Motor Speedway. Not only did Droste celebrate his 19th birthday in victory lane, but he did it with Late Model legends Gary Crawford, Ed Sanger and Curt Hansen on-hand to present the trophy in victory lane. The three former drivers, who competed against Droste’s grandfather Red in the 1960s and 1970s, were in attendance to honor the memory of the speedway’s first promoter, Vern Weber, who passed away last winter. Jerry King took the lead at the drop of the green and was pestered by Luke Pestka while Droste worked through the pack from a fifth row start. Droste made his way into the top five on the 11th of 25 laps and powered into second before caution slowed action on the 20th circuit. Droste made his way beneath King to steal the lead two laps later en route to his first Late Model win in Independence. King ran second ahead of Rick Wendling. J. [Read More]

Pettitt guesses right for Stock Car win at Off Road

By Randy Pospishil NORFOLK, Neb. (June 6) – Setting up a car to race on a dirt track is “a guessing game” according to Ron Pettitt, who won the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature at Off Road Speedway Saturday night. Pettitt took advantage of his front row starting position and basically sped away from the field to lead each and every lap for his first win at the new track, leaving the other drivers, primarily Kyle Prauner, Zach Zietner and Jason Wilkinson, to fight it out for second place. “We had an awesome night. We had a good car. The track played into our favor because it was a fast track,” Pettitt said. “We just had the right setup. It’s a guessing game, and we picked it perfectly. It was heavy, so when it’s heavy you can usually drive into the corner harder than you would a dry, slick track.” Ultimately, Zietner was able to hold on to second place, while Prauner was able to pass Wilkinson in turn three of the final lap to [Read More]

Kocks is first, final leader at Cottage Grove

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 6) – Jason Kocks was the first and final leader in Saturday’s Xtreme Motors Sports IMCA Modified main event at Cottage Grove Speedway. In the first four laps there were four different leaders. Kocks seemed to have the field covered but multiple cautions made it difficult to establish and maintain a sizable lead. Kocks lost the coveted position to Kinzer Cox on lap 19. Unfortunately, a few moments later the two got together at the start/finish line and Cox sustained too much damage to continue. Kocks led the rest of the way to score his first win of the 2015 campaign. Scott Lenz was the runner-up and Gus Cooper ended his evening in third.

Hurst inches by Maitland for Jackson County Hawkeye Dirt Tour win

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 9) – The margin of Jeremiah Hurst’s career first Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature win was measured in inches. And not very many of them. Hurst caught Ryan Maitland coming out of the final turn Tuesday at Jackson County Speedway and won the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event by not much more than a bumper. The $1,000 victory landed him on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Justin Kay raced from 16th starting to third in his HDT debut. Ben Chapman was fourth while defending series champion Mike Van Genderen moved atop the point standings with his fifth place showing. Maitland had led 24-plus laps after starting from the pole and withstanding early pressure from Chapman.
