Who needs notes? Gearhart is first in Thomas County Fair Modified feature

COLBY, Kan. (July 31) – Those copious notes Cody Gearhart had from his one previous visit to Colby didn’t apply when he returned to Thomas County Speedway for Friday’s fair special. It didn’t matter. Gearhart led the last 21 of 25 circuits in winning the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event. The $1,000 victory was accompanied by a spot on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I won the one time I ran here last season. This was the first time I’ve been back this year,” said Gearhart, now giving serious thought to make more frequent trips to Thomas County. “They’d decreased the banking (this spring) since the last time I was here so the notes I took from last year didn’t apply.” Taking a more off the cuff approach, Gearhart started fourth in the field of 24 and avoided getting caught up in an early multi-car fracas. Stock Car Challenge bragging rights belong to Nichols

By Kelly Ninas LEXINGTON, Neb. (Aug. 2) – Bragging rights belonged to Mike Nichols at Dawson County Raceway’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Challenge Sunday night. Nichols raced from 11th to win the pole dash, then from 12th to top the main event. He took home $2,360 for his efforts, an amount that included $1,500 for the main event victory, $500 when he agreed to invert the top 12 finishers from the pole dash and $360 in lap money. Kyle Clough led the first seven times around the oval from his pole start. Nichols passed his way toward the front on the high line, then went to the lowest line to drive by Clough. “B” feature qualifier Kyle Vanover raced from 14th starting to second but wasn’t able to catch Nichols. Whitman wins fair feature at OshKosh 

By Dave Panske OSHKOSH, Wis. (Aug. 4) – Johnny Whitman was the Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modified winner Tuesday, during the Winnebago County Fair show at Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway. Eric Mahlik had settled into first with the white flag in the air but Whitman made a final lap move pay off, edging Mahlik a the line for his second feature win of the season here. Mahlik took se­cond with Mike Wedelstadt scored next. Jeff Schmuhl held off Kleinschmidt over the final laps to record his second local Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature win of the season.  The battle for the third was tight the entire second half of the race with Jon Schultz taking the position at the finish line. The stars came out for the Total Power Sales IMCA Stock Car feature. DeYoung cruises at Crystal

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Aug. 1) – After disaster was averted, Johnny DeYoung raced to the Allstar Perfor­mance IMCA Modified checkers Saturday at Crystal Motor Speedway. Jerry Hunt’s engine had given up the ghost coming down the front stretch in front of most of the field but everyone except Hunt was able to continue. Kody Johnson took the point but gave it up to DeYoung a few laps in and he went on to cruise to the win. Johnson was second and Mitchell Hunt third.

Sunday wins for Wilson, Tucker at Merced Speedway 

By Don Martin II MERCED, Calif. (Aug. 2) – Alex Wilson won Sunday’s 20-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified fea­ture at Merced Speedway. The lead trio of Bob Williamson, Wilson and Bill Egleston ran close early on.  An inside move on the seventh lap gained Wilson the lead, but he got sideways a lap later as Egleston raced by.  However, Wilson beat Egleston back to the line for the lead on lap nine. Alex Wilson started to pull away, Kyle Wilson began making his move, passing Ricky Thatcher for fourth on lap 11 and Williamson for third on lap 15.  As Alex Wilson happily took the checkered flag, Kyle made a low move in the final turn to grab second from Egleston. After taking the lead from Dwayne Short and surviving a late challenge from Bruce Nelson, Gary Tucker won his second 20-lap Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod event of the season.

Mayden’s the Man at Cottage Grove

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 1) – Career win number one in the class came Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified hotshoe Jake Mayden. Kinzer Cox was the early pace setter and remained in the lead until lap five, when Mayden joined him up front and the pair battled side-by-side. Cox regained the lead on lap eight only to have it taken away on the following circuit by Mayden. Mayden lost the lead on lap 14 to Cox but got back around him on lap 15. Mayden stayed in the lead the rest of the way. Cox was second while Mark Carrell took third.

Rose tunes up for big shows with IMCA Modified win at Britt 

By Greg Grabianowski BRITT, Iowa (Aug. 1) – Rob Rose tuned up for the upcoming specials at Hancock County Speedway by winning the Saturday feature for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Rose made his way to the front of the 19-car field from outside row two. Runner-up was Ben Kraus and 12th starting Hunter Marriott was third. Calvin Lange earned his second local IMCA Sunoco Stock Car victory of the summer, followed by Kevin Opheim and Ned Kalis. Hancock County win number five this season came for George Nordman in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Nick Meyer was second and Nate Whitehurst finished third. Cody Nielsen topped the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main in front of Cory Gansen and Chanse Hollatz. Winner of the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature was Jesse Lunsford in his first trip to Britt.

Austin Luellen picks up SportMod win number one 

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (Aug. 2) – Austin Luellen got the best of brother Clint in winning Sunday’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature at Stuart Speedway. Austin took charge early while Clint advanced to second, then looked high and low but unsuccessfully for a way around. Jeff James overcame contact with the wall, regained the lead from Nick Roberts and won the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature. Todd Cooney took the lead on lap nine in the IMCA Late Model main and won in front of ninth starting John Emerson. Sixth starting Brian Blessington put the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature away after taking the lead on lap three. Shannon Anderson took the front spot back from Buck Schafroth in winning the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main. Top honors in the Mach-1 Sport Compact feature went to Jacob Reiter.

Ward wins again at Tri-City

AUBURN, Mich. (July 31) – A.J. Ward notched another Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified feature win Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway. Former Dixie Modified champion Matt Szecsodi led the opening circuits of the 20-lap main event before rookie Gavin Hunyady took the front spot away and led until lap nine. Ward raced from 11th starting and led the final half of the race to cruise to another victory.  Johnny DeYoung was second and Chad Wernette took third.

Saunders scores at Oshkosh 

By Dave Panske OSHKOSH, Wis. (July 31) – Brock Saunders parlayed a restart with five laps left to win Friday’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature at Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway. Jason Vandenberg was in front when the only caution of the night came out. The field ran three- and four-wide into the first turn and Saunders emerged from the scrum with the lead. Jon Schultz outran Jeff Schmuhl for second. Eric Scribner won for the first time at Oshkosh, getting the best of Jerry Wilinski in a back-and-forth Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modified main event that went down to the final circuit. Following a late caution and five-lap sprint to the finish, Travis Van Straten won his third straight and seventh local Total Power Sales IMCA Stock Car feature of the season by holding off Joe White. Drivers inducted into the Oshkosh Walk of Fame during intermission ceremonies were Ron Van Roy, Mike Pahlow and Charlie Ewald.
