Dodge City Modified Stampede this Saturday

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – Added money is on the line for the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified ranks at Dodge City Raceway Park this Saturday night, April 9 as the state-of-the-art 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas hosts the fourth annual $1,200 to win Dodge City Modified Stampede. Oberlin’s David Murray Jr., a four-time IMCA national champion, has topped three of four previous Dodge City Modified Stampede features including a sweep of both nights of the inaugural edition in 2013 and then another win in last year’s version. Past track champion Brendon Gemmill stands as the only other driver to reach Modified Stampede victory lane with a 2014 triumph. Gemmill, who is one of only two drivers along with his father Troy to finish among the top ten in all four previous Modified Stampede features, rallied from 13th to take fifth in this past weekend’s season-opening event. Russell races to $1,000 Nolan Wren Memorial payday 

WILLIS, Texas (April 2) – A former mini sprint racer took home the maximum share of the purse from Saturday’s Nolan Wren Memorial. Tyler Russell held off Jeb Sessums for the $1,000 checkers at Gator Motorplex. The Southern United Sprints victory was the career first in any class at Willis for Russell. “This was definitely the biggest win I’ve ever had,” the third-year IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car pilot said. “It was an exciting race to win. It was such a great feeling. I was definitely overwhelmed.” Early leader Kent Lewis Sr., Matt Migl and Trey Schmidt rounded out the top five. Russell started outside row one in the 20-lap main event and headed pursuit of Lewis, chasing the leader into lapped traffic before midway. Another Kansas special, another sweep for Grabouski

(April 1-2) – Another early-season special in Kansas ended with Jordan Grabouski headed home to Nebraska with two more Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature wins and a pair of $1,000 checks. Grabouski swept Friday and Saturday feature events at Salina Speedway’s DirtFest, leading start to finish in 25-lap headliners both nights. “We have drawn good and the car has been really good,” said Grabouski, also the winner both nights at RPM Speedway’s Sunflower Classic the weekend before. ”We’ve had a lot of fun the last couple weekends. Hopefully we can keep that up.” Grabouski drew the outside row two start on opening night and the inside row two start on Saturday. Both features saw long green flag runs with Grabouski scored first every time around. Raceway Park opens with April 8, 9 IMCA Spring Nationals

JEFFERSON, S.D. – There’s a $1,000 to win main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and $2,000 in potential bonus money for four other sanctioned divisions at Raceway Park’s Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 Spring Nationals. Saturday’s Modified feature is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying event and pays a minimum of $100 to start. IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and Mach-1 Sport Compacts each night pay $500 to win. Any drivers in those divisions winning both nights earn a $500 Double Down bonus and go home with a total of $1,500 for their Spring Nationals efforts. First track points awarded this week at Osky, Donnellson

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – First weekly points races of the 2016 season are on the ticket Wednesday, April 6 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa and Friday, April 8 at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and Mach-1 Sport Compact drivers get free admission and there is no entry fee for the lidlifter at Osky. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. Drivers in the sanctioned Modified, Stock Car, Northern SportMod and Sport Compact divisions get in for half-price at Donnellson. Hot laps are at 6:45 p.m. and racing is at 7:30 p.m. NSL 360 Sprint Cars and Lee County late models also run Friday night. First night for IMCA Hobby Stock track points at Lee County is April 15.

Independence opens with $1,000 to win IMCA Modified event

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds run for $1,000 to win at Independence Motor Speedway’s season-opening Spring Break special this Saturday, April 9. The feature is a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot-qualifying event. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks are also on the program. They’ll vie for IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional and Allstar Performance State but no local track points. There is no entry fee for any division; pit passes are $25. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62 and over and students ages 12-17, and free for kids 11 and under when accompanying a paid adult. Cottage Grove opener is Saturday, first 60 fans get in free 

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. ­– Saturday, April 9 will kick off the 2016 season for Cottage Grove Speed­way. This year marks the 60th year of action at the historic ¼-mile clay oval and a special promotion will be offered for fans. The first 60 people in line when the front gates open at 4 p.m. will get into the race for free. In addition to Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, classes in action include 360 sprints, late models, street stocks and Quality RV hornets. “It is so awesome that Cottage Grove Speedway can say they’ve had racing here for the last 60 years,” commented CGS Promoter Heather Boyce. “We’re expecting a very good car count with cars coming from all over the area and out of state. Humphries takes checkers in Virginia Sprint Series opener

(April 2) – On a windy and cold Saturday night, the Virginia Sprint Series kicked off at Shenandoah Speedway and the cat and mouse chase between Tom Humphries and Jerald Harris continued. Humphries topped the trophy dash, then came out on top of the main event for IMCA EMI Rac­eSaver Sprint Cars. Charlie Ware and Tony Harris paced the feature field to green with Harris out first and Humphries and Jerald Harris right behind. The leader bobbled on lap two and Humphries shot to the front, leaving the Harris brothers to fight over second. Jerald got by on lap eight and set off after Humphries for the last half of the race. Late caution benefits Brown at Britt IMCA Frost Buster

BRITT, Iowa (April 3) – The caution flag that waved late in Sunday’s Frost Buster for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds feature at Hancock County Speedway actually came out at the right time for leader Kyle Brown. Brown had pretty much checked out and was catching up with traffic running the same line before the yellow appeared with five circuits left in the 20-lapper. He stayed in front following the ensuing restart to take the $1,000 win a couple car lengths ahead of Kelly Shryock. Completing the top five were Jay Noteboom, Adam Larson and Tim Ward. Early leader Trent Loverude was sixth. “I was kind of glad we had that yellow. (April 2) – Guy Norton stole the spotlight by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 25-lap IMCA Modified main event atop the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval. Norton battled from the fourth starting position for his first Arizona Differential IMCA Modified win of the season ahead of 10th starting Jay Foster, Mike Strobl, 12th starting Bryson Curry and new track points leader Zack Madrid.
