Abelson’s third straight BMS North Central Region title complemented by tour, special events success

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Chris Abelson wanted to concentrate on winning his first Hawkeye Dirt Tour crown and hitting more special events this season. He accomplished both goals, while racing to a third straight BMS North Central Region title. “Following the Hawkeye Dirt Tour was my goal for the year. Guillaume sharpens IMCA Modified skills, earns Razor Chassis South Central crown

HASLET, Texas – Matt Guillaume changed his focus and reigned in a different IMCA region this season. After posting three consecutive championships in the EQ Cylinder Heads Southern Region for Stock Cars, Guillaume ran exclusively in the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified division. The result was seven feature wins, Boyd Raceway track and Allstar Performance state titles, and the Razor Chassis South Central Region crown. National runner-up Sample rules in Larry Shaw Race Cars Western Region

WINNEMUCCA, Nev. – Cory Sample started the season with a chip on his shoulder. He ended it with his first Larry Shaw Race Cars Western Regional crown. Sample, from Winnemucca, Nev., won 26 features – including his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified career 100th – on the way to the regional title and runner-up finish in national point standings. “We totaled our car last year at the Duel In The Desert and came out with a chip on our shoulder this season. We worked and worked and worked,” said Sample. “Our maintenance program got better, the tracks in northern Nevada worked together more and my schedule at work allowed me to work more weekends. Coopman disproves doubters with fourth career national title

MANKATO, Minn. – Even after he’d won a career third IMCA national championship last year, Nate Coopman had his doubters. There shouldn’t be any naysayers left after the Mankato, Minn., driver won 33 features and his fourth national Mach-1 Sport Compact crown this season. “I didn’t plan to run for it at all but there were people who told me I couldn’t do it again,” Coopman explained. “So there was some motivation there, plus I won a bunch of races early in the season and knew if I did any traveling that I’d have a pretty good shot.” Coopman scored feature wins at seven of the nine tracks in three states he raced at, collecting 14 straight checkers between May 6 and June 18. Fast start sends Anderson to record sixth modern era title

DES MOINES, Iowa – Always a contender, Shannon Anderson served notice early that he’d be the driver to beat in the race for the 2016 IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock national championship. Thirteen wins in the Des Moines, Iowa driver’s first 19 starts set the stage for his record sixth career national title. The national points leader by mid-May, Anderson had 27 wins in 53 starts to complement Big Daddy Race Cars Northern Region and Kossuth County Speedway and Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway track titles. Olson raises bar even higher with IMCA Northern SportMod national title

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Tony Olson didn’t leave himself a lot of room for improvement when he won 27 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod features and three local track titles last season. But he raised the bar even higher in 2016 with his career first IMCA national championship. “It’s kind of crazy how everything worked out,” said Olson, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Last year we were a couple points short but we learned a lot. This year we started figuring some more things out and had about the same number of wins at mid-season. HARLAN, Iowa – Mike Nichols described his month of June as phenomenal. The same adjective can be applied to his entire season. Nichols won all 15 of his June starts and 54 times in all en route to his career sixth IMCA Sunoco Stock Car national championship. He joined 2016 Hobby Stock king Shannon Anderson as the first drivers to win six national titles in the same division during the modern era of IMCA. Shouse sprints to seven feature wins, IMCA RaceSaver national championship

MUSTANG, Okla. – One of the best spokesmen for the IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars is the division’s newest national champion. Andy Shouse won seven features, along with the Sprint Series of Oklahoma and Allstar Performance Oklahoma State crowns in his first full season in the 305 class. He bookended those feature victories with strings of top five finishes at the start and the end of the 2016 campaign. “We just wanted to race. We didn’t plan to chase national points but we looked up one night and saw that we were in the thick of it,” said Shouse. “We really enjoyed this season and had a lot of good finishes. Time gives Toland a new appreciation of IMCA title

DAVENPORT, Iowa – By no means is Rob Toland ready to hang up his racing helmet. But the oldest IMCA driver to win a national championship has definitely learned to better appreciate his on-track accomplishments. Toland won the national Late Model crown for the third time, as well as track titles at his hometown Davenport Speedway and Quad City Speedway, plus the Allstar Performance Illinois State championship.
