Marolf, Zogg score Driver/Fan Appreciation Night wins

By Jerry Mackey WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Aug. 12) – Saturday night’s races were run on a near-perfect evening with a large crowd in attendance for Driver/Fan appreciation night at West Liberty Raceway. When the final checkered flag of the night waved it was Nick Marolf celebrating his second consecutive Out Pace Racing Products Late Model win. Marolf took advantage of a lap 18 caution in taking the top spot away from race-long leader Dave Wada. Wada had built a comfortable lead but the caution brought Marolf to his rear bumper. After taking over the lead, Marolf shot to the high side and sailed on to the win. Justin Kay was able to work to the front from his 10th position start and take second ahead of Rob Moss. The Performance Concepts IMCA Modified feature saw Larry Herring get out front and appear on his way to the win before a caution on lap 15 brought the field to his rear bumper for the restart. DeYoung tops Tri-City championship night show

(Aug. 11) – Myron DeYoung was the feature winner Friday night while Kody Johnson’s fifth-place finish netted him the unofficial Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified crown at Tri-City Motor Speedway. Johnson came into the evening needing at least a top 10 finish to ensure the unofficial crown. Chaz Pray and Gavin Hunyady both had quietly successful and consistent seasons that had them in contention for a championship. Hunyady, who won the four-car dash, had to pit early in the first half of the 25-lap feature event to change a tire. He came through the 21-car field and finished a strong seventh. Mike Stevenson led the opening lap before Preston DeShano took his turn at the front. Pray was motoring his way into the top five before he slid off of turn two and into the water barrels, ending his night with a disappointing 19th place finish and ending his championship hopes. Sanders IMCA Modified Challenge Tour set for Aug. 17-20

ADA, Minn. – IMCA Modifieds race for $1,000 to win each night of the Aug. 17-20 Sanders Modified Challenge Tour, along with shares of a $7,000 point fund. Features Thursday, Aug. 17 At Norman County Raceway in Ada, Minn., Friday, Aug. 18 at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., Saturday, Aug. 19 at Jamestown, N.D., Speedway and Sunday, Aug. 20 at Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, Minn., all are qualifying events for the 2018 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot and pay a minimum of $100 to start. Tour point standings are based on the best three of four finishes and drivers must compete at least three nights to be eligible. The top driver in points earns $1,500, with $1,000 for second, $800 for third, $600 for fourth and $500 for fifth. Point funds will be distributed to top 20 eligible drivers. Beer Hill Gang fundraiser nets $1,161

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Aug. 11) –   It was a fun night away from the track as fans and race teams gathered at Quaker Steak and Lube in Mechanicsburg for an evening of fun and friendship. Matt Miller from the Beer Hill Gang hosted the event, which donates a percentage of food sales to the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series along with raffle items provided by teams and supporters. Scott Ellerman and Jaremi Hanson had their cars on display as restaurant patrons had the opportunity to see cars up close. Several drivers were also on hand along with volunteers from the series. Dave Stewart, “the commissioner” of the Beer Hill Gang was on hand as well. A total of $1,161 was raised through the raffle and auction while the food percentage will be forwarded by the restaurant. The Beer Hill Gang has already promised to round out to $1,500 which was our goal. Sachau wins Stuart’s Bones Memorial

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Jake Sachau was the $1,000 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner at Stuart Speedway’s Bones/Richard Welch Memorial Friday night. Josh Sink and Nelson drew the 1-2 chips to make up the front row. Colton Nelson led early over Sink and Doug Smith. Following a lap four restart it was Nelson, Austin Luellen and Hunter Longnecker at the front with Chase Rudolf and Jake Sachau battling it out for fourth. Sachau took that place on lap 10, then worked Longnecker over for third on lap 15. At this point it appeared Nelson was well on his way to the win but cautions came out on laps 22 and 24, the second yellow setting up a two-lap dash for the cash. Nelson led at the white flag but his car pushed severely and allowed Luellen to get up beside him. Meanwhile, Sachau snuck it in on the bottom in turn three as Nelson pushed up the track again. DeFrance, Jenae Gustin take Marshalltown checkers

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Darrel DeFrance and Jenae Gustin kept it in the family with Friday night wins at Marshalltown Speedway Veteran Joe McBirnie, looked destined to go to victory lane after grabbing the lead on the opening lap and driving away from the IMCA Modified field. Fifth row starter Jenae Gustin had something to say about that, however, putting her ride to the top of the track and setting sail. Gustin gained ground each lap and by the halfway mark, had flown into the lead. It was Gustin who now pulled away from the pack, keeping the lead and scoring a resounding win. McBirnie held on to second place and third was Jake Strayer. Not to be outdone, Darrel DeFrance matched his niece Jenae’s win by scoring the victory in a close finish to the IMCA Late Model contest. Kay doubles up at Farley

By Jerry Mackey FARLEY, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Justin Kay took his opponents to school twice on Back to School Night Friday at Farley Speedway. The headliner was the 25-lap Out-Pace Racing Products IMCA Late Model feature. Kay chased down leader Rick Wendling and made the winning move just past the 15 lap mark. Kay went on to take the checkers ahead of Wendling and Doug Nigh. In the GSI Collision Specialists IMCA Modified feature, Kay raced from the back of the field and took the lead from Ben Carpenter with about five laps to go. Carpenter had a great run on Friday night taking second ahead of Joel Callahan. The GSI Collision Specialists IMCA Northern SportMod feature saw a first-time winner in 2017. Nic Coates led the feature flag to flag in scoring a very impressive win over Troy Bauer and Tyler Soppe. Phil Holtz scored the Bakey Seamless Gutters IMCA Stock Car win.

Ryan rules Davenport Late Models

By Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (Aug. 11) – Matt Ryan ruled the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature Friday at Davenport Speedway. Jonathan Brauns jumped out to the early lead but that would be erased by a yellow flag. After the restart, Ryan and Brauns battled for the lead. That allowed Rob Toland to streak by on the inside. While leading, Toland pulled off the track with 10 laps remaining. Ryan inherited the lead and pulled away from the field for the remainder of the race. The victory was his fourth of the season at Davenport. Brauns was second and Chuck Hanna took third. Toland had to pass Jordan Hicks twice to win the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modified main. The first pass was negated by a caution flag. Once in the lead, Toland started to pull away. Hicks stayed close enough to the leader to take second. Greg Durbin finished third. It’s Ardmore and Lawton this weekend for Sprint Series of Oklahoma

By David Smith Jr. OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – A huge weekend double-header awaits the Sprint Series of Oklahoma IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series presented by Smiley’s Racing Products. The tour will make a Friday, Aug. 18 appearance at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore before making its inaugural appearance at Lawton Speedway for a Saturday, Aug. 19 event atop the famed red clay quarter-mile oval. The SSO has been scheduled four previous times this 2017 race season with Mother Nature having its way twice. Michael Day won the last time the series visited Ardmore back on June 23 while Chad Koch took the series opener back on March 25. Dating back to last year’s inaugural season, Southern Oklahoma Speedway has hosted a total of six series events without a repeat winner. Season-long point leader Jake Martens comes into the two-race weekend with a slim 13-point advantage over defending tour and IMCA national champion Andy Shouse. IMCA Modifieds chase $1,000 Benefit Weekend check at Idaho Falls

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – Night two of Idaho Falls Raceway EIRMC Auxiliary Benefit Weekend will be headlined by IMCA Modifieds running for $1,000 to win along with a berth on the 2018 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Sanctioned Modifieds and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are on Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19 programs at Idaho Falls. More money is also on the line Saturday for Northern SportMods as they run for $500 to win. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Allstar Performance State and track points will be awarded both nights in both divisions. Modifieds also earn Larry Shaw Racing Western Region points and a $500 bonus will be paid to the Modified driver sweeping the weekend. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 7 p.m. Saturday. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors 65 and over and veterans with military ID, $6 for kids ages 6-12 and free for five and under. Proceeds from the weekend go to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
