Dodge City opener set for Saturday night

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – With spring in full swing at long last, it’s time for the methanol to flow and the dirt to fly at Dodge City Raceway Park. The 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas gets the 2018 season under way in grand style with three must-see events over the course of the month of May. This month’s events at DCRP include the season-opener, the rescheduled Modified Stampede and the first appearance of the season for the United Rebel Sprint Series. It all begins with this Saturday night’s season-opening championship card on May 5. After an idle weekend, action continues with the sixth annual Modified Stampede on Saturday, May 19. Four Sunday dates for IMCA Modifieds at Sheyenne

LISBON, N.D. – Four Sunday dates for IMCA Modifieds are on the schedule for Sheyenne Speedway’s 45th anniversary season. The sanctioned division is on the opening night program June 10, as well as July 1, Aug. 12 and Sept. 30 cards. “We’re excited about this. We’ve got a lot of good drivers in the area who have been going to the IMCA Modified,” said promoter Benjie Froemke. “We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback from drivers and other tracks.” The quarter-mile dirt oval at Lisbon, located in the southeast corner of North Dakota, will share drivers with the Friday-Saturday tandem of Red River Valley Speedway at West Fargo and Jamestown Speedway, and worked with Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, Minn., for these four dates. Outerwears Performance to continue IMCA Modified special events awards

Rust, Thornton hustle to $1,000 High Banks wins

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (April 26-27) – Joel Rust hustled his way to the $1,000 checkers Thursday night at Marshalltown Speedway. Ricky Thornton Jr. did the same on Friday. Rust and Thornton were IMCA Modified winners at Marshalltown’s season-opening Twin High Banks Hustle. While Thornton was already on the ballot, Rust’s victory made him vote eligible for the upcoming Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. After drawing the outside pole, Rust had to hold off Hunter Marriott late in the contest. Ninth starting Tyler Droste, Tim Ward and Ethan Dotson completed the top five. Thornton went from last on Thursday to first in the Friday feature, leading every lap and winning ahead of Marriott, Cayden Carter, Kyle Brown and Richie Gustin. Next Deery Series dates are this weekend at Maquoketa, Quad City

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 1) – The only weekend doubleheader of the season is next for the Deery Brothers Summer Series, with $2,000 to win events on Saturday, May 5 at Maquoketa Speedway and Sunday, May 6 at Quad City Speedway in East Moline, Ill. The second and third installments of the tour for IMCA Late Models both pay a minimum of $300 to start. Pit gates and the grandstand both open at 3 p.m. Saturday at Maquoketa. Packed pits for Lincoln County lidlifter

By Kelly Ninas NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (April 28) – Perseverance was tested but it was worth the wait for the 2018 Lincoln County Raceway season opener in North Platte on Saturday evening. The heated action was highlighted with the pits being jam packed with competitors looking to start their season off on the right foot in front of a large crowd. Earning IMCA feature wins were David Murray Jr., Danny Concelman, Mikey Dancer, Jeromy Wagner and Andrew Baumgarder. No stranger to the winner’s circle, Murray weathered a storm restarts to earn his career 550th IMCA Modified feature victory. Coming from the middle of the pack, Cale Osborn pressured Murray on the final restart, only to be forced to settle for runner-up accolades. Ward shines at Crystal

CRYSTAL, Mich. (April 28) – After venturing to New York for his first IMCA Modified feature win of the season, A.J. Ward raced closer to home and got his second Saturday at Crystal Motor Speedway. The two-time defending Dirt Works Eastern Region champion and 2017 Crystal track king bested Brenten DeYoung and Brady Hollenbeck in the race to the checkers. Matt Szecsodi and Austin Wonch rounded out the top five.

Noll notches IMCA Modified win at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (April 28) – Jason Noll picked off his third win in four events in the IMCA Modified division Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. Noll raced his way from sixth to an early lead, overtaking Jay Foster who started on the front row. Once Noll found himself out front, his MRT Chassis was set on cruise control to his third win in four points races at Canyon. Chaz Baca Jr. and John Parmeley put on a good show, both coming from the fifth row to land on the podium, with Baca eventually working his way around Parmeley to finish in second.
