Points leaders, lists take shape at Off Road

By Randy Pospishil sports@norfolkdailynews.com NORFOLK, Neb. (June 3, 2023) – The racing season may be just one-third of the way toward completion, but the points lists and the respective leaders in each of the various divisions are already taking shape at Off Road Speedway. Even at this early stage of the season, every point earned contributes to a potential track championship. Cory Dumpert, for example, entered Saturday night’s regular night of racing with a narrow three-point advantage over Devin Johnson and Chase Osborne in the IMCA Sunoco Late Model division. Dumpert will be able to add to that margin, albeit slightly, after his feature win, while Johnson was black flagged during the race and Osborne finished third. Dumpert patiently moved from deep in the field, with a starting position five rows back from the leaders then, after gaining momentum exiting turn two, cut sharply down the track entering turn three to secure the lead from Justin Bertschinger just before the race’s second caution and restart with four laps remaining. Dumpert’s win is his second of [Read More]

Oenning drives to first IMCA Late Model win at Donnellson

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 2, 2023) – A busy night of IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing took place at the Lee County Speedway on Friday with Darkside Tint & Graphix helping to bring all the action. When the final checkered flag waved at 10:10 p.m., one driver had claimed his first career win, two drivers earned their first of the season at Donnellson and two more were repeat winners. The 25-lap IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature saw Ed Hollenbeck and Blaire Barton lead the field to green. Hollenback led on lap one over Ray Raker and Sam Halstead. As Hollenbeck worked the bottom, Raker went to the top to try and get by. On lap eight, Raker used the momentum off the top of turn four to grab the top spot away from Hollenbeck. Action was slowed on lap 15 when CJ Horn spun to bring out the yellow. On the restart, Raker jumped back out front, with Jason Oenning and Jeremy Pundt close behind. Just after the lap was scored complete, Frank Mason [Read More]

VINTON, Iowa (June 2, 2023) – With the Memorial Weekend in the rearview, IMCA racing action will heat up literally and figuratively all the way to the end of the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season. Correspondingly, drivers in all nine IMCA divisions winning heat races through the last full weekend of September receive heat win decals courtesy of Allstar Performance. Winning 10 or more heats this season gets them a $100 gift card from the Watervliet, Mich., high performance parts manufacturer. The driver, regardless of division, winning the most heat races gets a $250 gift card. The sole requirements, IMCA Marketing Integration and Sponsorship Director Carson Becker-Gramm reminds drivers, is that they must display those heat win decals on their race car and send a picture of their car proving decal placement, to be eligible. Photos should be emailed to contingencies@imca.com. “Heat win decals, and feature win decals from AERO Race Wheels, have been sent to every IMCA track,” said Becker-Gramm. “Drivers should make sure they are getting those on race nights and getting [Read More]

Just 14, but Beau already knows how to win in an IMCA Late Model

PLAINVIEW, Neb. (May 27, 2023) – A high school freshman-to-be finished first in the IMCA Sunoco Late Model class Saturday night at Off Road Speedway. Rookie Beau Johnson started outside the front row and led start to finish of the 25-lapper, taking the checkers ahead of Nelson Vollbrecht and four-time and defending national champion Cory Dumpert. “The car just got better and better,” said Johnson, who had broken while leading with nine laps left the night before at Boone County Raceway. “We caught a lapped car near the end and were able to win by about four car lengths.” One of, if not the youngest feature winner in division history, Johnson is still a month shy of 14 and a half. He’ll be a ninth grader this fall at Plainview High School and has already graduated to the Late Models from go karts, running at the track adjacent to the big oval at Norfolk. “It’s a big step up but I got in three (non-sanctioned) starts at I-80 last year,” said Johnson, who wheels a [Read More]

Close Racing Supply backs touring IMCA Modifieds in NY, PA

ELDRED, Pa. (May 31, 2023) – The not infrequent chats Close Racing Supply owner Joel Smith had with customer Jake Maynard frequently covered the topics of IMCA and Modifieds in general and IMCA Modifieds in particular. Those conversations ultimately led Close to taking on the title sponsor role for the then-new NY-Penn IMCA Modified Series three years ago. The Eldred, Pa., suspension component manufacturer and high performance parts retailer provides a portion of the point fund and helps Maynard, now the tour director, keep connected with other NY-Penn sponsors. “We have serviced the dirt track industry for more than 25 years and have always been in Modifieds. We’ve had some very good IMCA drivers come out of this area over the years,” Smith said. “We do a lot of traveling and get to Iowa for Super Nationals every year.” “I like everything about IMCA, especially the rules,” he continued. “Everything is done right.” Doing everything right was Maynard’s goal when he took over at the helm of the tour, and as director of the Eastern [Read More]
