Maquoketa Speedway falls to weather, season opener postponed to April 27

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 11, 2022) – The Maquoketa Speedway dodged the predicted wet weather on Saturday night and held a fast, action-packed night of racing on the very smooth, fast ¼-mile dirt oval.  The headliner of the night was the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature that went 20 laps caution-free. Travis Denning was able to get past early leader Spencer Diercks and move into the lead just before lap 10 and went on to record his third win at the Maquoketa Speedway in 2022. Diercks held off the 2021 track champion Jeff Larson at the checkers.  Jacob Ellithorpe had his IMCA Sunoco Stock Car back in fine form on Saturday night. Ellithorpe had spent countless hours in the garage making repairs following an incident that caused severe damage to the drive train in his no. 72 Stock car. MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 5) – Once he got in front, there was no catching Justin Kay in Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Maquoketa Speedway. Kay started in the second row, slipped inside leader Terry Neal on the 12th circuit and led to the finish of the IMCA Late Model Tour feature. “Terry moved up to get by a lapped car and that’s when I was able to pass him,” Kay said. “Any time you get an opportunity like that, you have to be ready.” The sole caution of the 50-lapper came out with three circuits to go and Kay by then handily ahead of Neal & Co. Unfazed, Kay pulled away again in taking the $2,000 checkers, his second in as many Deery dates this season, third in a row and career 26th. By Rob Hinckley MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 8) – The pill draw was key for Jeff Larson Saturday at Maquoketa Speed­way. The Freeport, Ill. ace drew the number one after his heat and fended off a crazy finish to win the QCJeeps.com IMCA Modified 25-lap special and the $1,000 top prize, as well as a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth.  Larson led all but two laps that a high-side charging Ray Cox Jr. paced. A caution as the white flag was about to fly bunched the field for a two-lap dash. Cox broke on the restart to bring out another yellow. Larson ran the low groove early in the event, switched high to try and run down Cox and then finished high to outrun Timmy Current.
