111 race teams pack Maquoketa Speedway

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 21, 2022) – Saturday night saw a season-high 111 race teams take part in an action packed night of racing on the Jackson County Fairgrounds’ ¼-mile dirt Maquoketa Speedway.  

The headliner of the night was the 20 lap Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event, a race that went non-stop with Travis Denning capturing his second feature win of the young season. Denning battled with Spencer Diercks for several laps before breaking away to score the win with a comfortable margin.

Diercks ran a strong second in getting to the checkers ahead of the previous week’s feature winner Ryan Duhme. 

The action-packed IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature win went to David Brandies. Kyle and Lane Vohringer started on the front row making for an all-Maquoketa front row. Lane Vohringer’s lead was short lived as Tim Bader took over the point but the ninth-starting Brandies emerged from a group of frontrunners and went on to score the win over a strong running Dustin Vis. Justin Kay made his first appearance of the season and ran third.  

The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods saw a strong field of competitors take the green for their 15-lap feature. Dan Carpenter led in the early going before Shane Paris took over. A week ago, Paris won in a three-wide finish at the checkers; this week, Paris was able to take the lead early and sail on to the win ahead of Carpenter and Jacob Arp. 

Jarrett Franzen celebrated his birthday by finishing fourth.

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock win went to a first time visitor to victory lane for the season. Sheldon Hunter has made a return to racing following a nine-year hiatus. Hunter is prepping the car to turn it over to his son, after the win that may be a little harder for Hunter to do, but the plan is still in place. Andrew Burke ran second to Hunter on Saturday night.

Miles finds fast line at Maquoketa

By Rob Hinckley  MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 22) – Jerry Miles bided his time, worked the high groove and sped by Logan Veloz with six laps left to win the 15-lap B&D Pit Stop IMCA Northern SportMod finale on Hall of Fame Night at Maquoketa Speedway.  Veloz, Rusty Deshaw, Tyler Soppe and Wes Digman came next. Point leader Soppe suffered a mechanical issue in his own no. 3T ride during his heat. He hopped into Scott Williams’ no. 9 and raced from the tail to that finish, his first outside the top two all season at Maquoketa.  Other feature winners were Ray Cox Jr. in the QCJeeps.com IMCA Modifieds, David Brandies in  the 15-lap GRE/REV Chassis IMCA Stock Cars and Randy Lamar in the Shawn’s Auto Service IMCA Hobby Stocks. The wins came after the inaugural class of the Maquoketa Speedway Hall of Fame was inducted. Ernie Cook, Bob Current, Pickle Edwards, Tom Feller, Lloyd Nabb and Karl Vohringer were honored during intermission.

Denning, Ellithorpe, score repeat wins at Maquoketa

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 11, 2022) – The Maquoketa Speedway dodged the predicted wet weather on Saturday night and held a fast, action-packed night of racing on the very smooth, fast ¼-mile dirt oval.  The headliner of the night was the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature that went 20 laps caution-free. Travis Denning was able to get past early leader Spencer Diercks and move into the lead just before lap 10 and went on to record his third win at the Maquoketa Speedway in 2022. Diercks held off the 2021 track champion Jeff Larson at the checkers.  Jacob Ellithorpe had his IMCA Sunoco Stock Car back in fine form on Saturday night. Ellithorpe had spent countless hours in the garage making repairs following an incident that caused severe damage to the drive train in his no. 72 Stock car. Maquoketa, Dubuque Deery events postponed

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 13) – Forecasts calling for less than pleasant temperatures Saturday and Sunday have resulted in postponements of Deery Brothers Summer Series events at Maquoketa Speedway and at Dubuque Speedway. Both IMCA Late Model tour events are to be rescheduled. The 33rd annual Deery Series now opens at Cedar County Raceway in Tipton with a $2,000 to win, minimum $300 to start main event next Saturday, April 20.  Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m.  Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m. Spectator admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students and free for kids ages 12 and under when accompanying a paid adult.
