Mullins flies to first Virginia Sprint Series checkers

NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (Aug. 7) – Matt Mullins joined the Virginia Sprint Series four years ago after having raced other divisions. 

But being from Iowa, he always wanted to race a Sprint Car and Saturday night fulfilled a life-long dream of not just racing Sprinters but winning in one. 

Mullins and Chris Ware paced the IMCA RaceSaver field to green with Mullins out first, Ware right behind and Mike Leraas and Daren Bolac racing for third. 

Mullins was really rolling out in clean air while Ware tryied to stay in touch. Bolac made it to third with Leraas fourth. Mullins was still out front flying as Bolac and Leraas advanced.

Brandon McLain made his way to fourth as Bolac was closing in on Mullins, but laps ran out as the leader flashed under the waving checkered flag for his first feature win. 

Next week it’s off to The Greater Cumberland Raceway in Cumberland, Md., with the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series on Saturday night Aug. 14.

Shatzer sails in opener for Virginia Sprint Series

By Jim Haines  ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (June 5) – Dylan Shatzer’s first trip to the tidewater area ended up being smooth sailing but much faster all the way to the Friday night Virginia Sprint Series win at Dixie­land Speedway.  The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car season-opening feature was lined up with Jake McLain and Shatzer on the front row. With the green flag waving Shatzer was out first with McLain and Bron­zie Lawson fighting for second right away.  The track was fast with Shatzer showing smooth was the way to go as he kept pulling away lap after lap with Lawson getting to second and setting his sights on the front. Tom Humphries made his way to third by lap 15.  After a quick yellow to push a stalled car from the track, Shatzer took off and the laps ran out, leaving Lawson in second and Humphries third.  The next Virginia Sprint Series race will be June 13 at Natural Bridge in Virginia or June 20 at Hagerstown Speedway.  Feature results – 1. Parade of different winners continues as Humphries tops Natural Bridge Sprint show

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (May 18) – On the first summer-like day Tom Humphries figured out what he needed to get back to victory lane. Humphries topped the Saturday Virginia Sprint Series feature at Natural Bridge Speedway, becom­ing the fifth different IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car tour winner in as many events so far this season. Charlie Ware and Bill Rice started on the front row as the field went green with Rice out first. Rice tried to gap the field but Humphries stayed right on him. Jerald Harris made his way after the front two, first getting by Charlie Ware and then Daren Bo­lac. Humphries was by Rice and checking out as Harris closed, going low into second to take up the chase. The laps clicked off as Harris kept closing as they went under the white flag they were side-by-side. Three RaceSaver series run Saturday at Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Pennsylvania Sprint Series will join two other IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series this Saturday night for a Father’s Day Weekend special program at Hagerstown Speedway.  PASS, the host Virginia Sprint Series and the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series will vie for supremacy June 19 on the half-mile track alongside Conococheague Creek in Washington County, Md.  Four weeks ago, PASS regular Dave Grube invaded a VSS/LHSS co-sanctioned race at Hagerstown and came away with the victory. An earlier RaceSaver date was rained out.  In 2019, VSS stalwart Jerald Harris was a winner, along with former PASS drivers Zach Newlin and Scott Ellerman.  A large field of cars is expected Saturday, including Grube and the last two IMCA RaceSaver national champions, Ken Duke and Garrett Bard. Local entries are expected to include Donnie Hendershot, a PASS winner earlier this season, and Dylan Shatzer, a former LHSS winner at Hagerstown and a winner this season at Hesston Speedway.
