Kelly Shryock: Century Club Member Times Two After a Lifetime Behind the Wheel

By Ben Deatherage FERTILE, Iowa (Aug. 14, 2026) — Long before the trophies, championships and hundreds of nights spent beneath the lights of dirt tracks across America, Kelly Shryock was a 12-year-old kid waiting for his father to come home. During the summer, Bob Shryock worked construction four 10-hour days each week, leaving precious little time to prepare his race car before Friday night. So Kelly learned to set valves. He worked alongside the crew. Whatever needed to be done, they tried to have the car ready when Bob walked through the door. Racing became more than something father and son did together. It became the only life Kelly ever really knew. $1,000-To-Win Modified Championship Highlights Increased-Purse Weekend at Douglas County

(Aug. 19, 2026) — The Douglas County Dirtrack championship will be decided for the Karl Kustoms IMCA Modifieds this weekend, with two nights of competition on tap Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21-22, while the Karl Kustoms IMCA Northern SportMods will also be in action both nights. Both divisions will compete for their regular purses Friday before the stakes increase Saturday. Modifieds will race for $1,000 to win Saturday night, with $600 going to the runner-up and $450 for third. The 24-car starting field will pay $100 to start. Saturday’s Modified winner will also earn eligibility to attempt to qualify for the Fast Shafts All-Star Modified Invitational during the Speedway Motors IMCA Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. The Douglas County Doubledown will increase the payday for the SportMods on Saturday, with the regular purse doubled. The winner will collect $800, while second pays $400 and third $350. Maquoketa Season Championships Washed Out; Modified Title to Be Decided Aug. 22

By Jerry Mackey MAQUOKETA, Iowa (Aug. 19, 2026) — Maquoketa Speedway’s scheduled season championship races fell victim to wet weather Saturday, Aug. 15, bringing the 2026 track point season to a close for four IMCA divisions. With the event unable to be rescheduled, track champions have been crowned in the Sunoco IMCA Stock Cars, Karl Kustoms IMCA Northern SportMods, Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sunoco IMCA Late Models. Jordan Miles earned the Stock Car championship, while Jarrett Franzen topped the SportMod standings. Jared Miles secured the Hobby Stock title, and Ron Klein was crowned the Late Model champion. The Karl Kustoms IMCA Modified championship remains to be decided. Modifieds will compete for track points Saturday, Aug. 22, with the division’s 2026 Maquoketa Speedway track champion to be crowned following the night’s racing. Track operators Kevin Yarolem, Jake Montoya and Matt Montoya thanked the drivers, crews, officials and fans for their support throughout the 2026 season at the quarter-mile dirt track located on the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
