Four drivers double up at RPM’s Sunflower Classic

By Mike Hughes

HAYS, Kan. (March 25-26) – One-hundred and ninety race teams from eight states converged on RPM Speedway for the fourth annual Sunflower Classic and four drivers backed up their Friday night main event wins with another trip to the winner’s circle on Saturday.

Jordan Grabouski topped both $1,000 to win, Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying features for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Other two-time winners were Mike Nichols in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Dustin Daniels in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Scott Spellmeier in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.

IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victories went to Garrett Hager and Cody Williams.

On Friday night, Dominic Ursetta jumped to the early lead in the 25-lap Modified feature. After a lap 13 caution, Jesse Sobbing took control and was followed by Ursetta and Grabouski.

Grabouski took the lead on lap 22 and a late-race caution set up a green, white, checkered finish.  Grabouski held on for the win over a hard-charging Tyler Frye. Sobbing was third.

The Stock Car feature was close the entire race. Justin Bussell spun with three laps to go to bring out a caution and had to go to the tail end of the restart. That handed the lead over to Nichols, who led the remaining distance. Casey Woken and Corey Dumpert rounded out the top three

Brendon Damon took the lead at the drop of the green in the Northern SportMod feature but was passed by Daniels after a lap three restart. Daniels held off the field to the checkers with Ryan Moser edging Trenton Kleweno at the line for third.

Cody Graham led the first 9 laps of the Hobby Stock feature before defending track champion Hager assumed command. Hager held off Graham for the win. Andrew Burg, who started 20th, was third.

Spellmeier led all 15-laps in the caution-filled Sport Compact feature. Billy Turner finished second, followed by David Norquest.

On Saturday, Grabouski took the lead from polesitter Scott Smith on lap 10 of the Modified main event. Second-running Frye’s night ended on lap 22 when he drove off on a restart. Sobbing made a late charge but had to settle for second. Third was Jeremy Frenier.

Nick Tubbs took the early lead in the Stock Car feature but was caught by Nichols on lap seven.  Nichols and Tubbs got caught up in lapped traffic, which made for an exciting race as the two worked their way around slower cars, and Nichols was first to the wire for the second night in a row. Bruce Plumisto finished third.

Kleweno led the SportMod feature to halfway. Daniels got on lap 13 and led to the checkers. Daniel Gottschalk passed Kleweno late for the runner-up spot.

Cody Williams, Friday’s “B” feature winner, was the new face in victory lane on Saturday as he passed Duane Wahrman on the second lap and led the distance in the Hobby Stock main event.  Jacob Olmstead chased Williams the last half of the race but had to settle for second, followed by Adam Armstrong.

Spellmeier was victorious for the second night in a row in the Sport Compact feature, this time following a back-and-forth battle over the last five laps and in traffic with Richard Crow.  Spellmeier regained the lead as they came to the white flag and held on for the victory. Nick Lindblad was third.

Sponsors of the fourth annual special were Xtreme Motorsports and D & B Motors.
