Seventh annual Modified Stampede this Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – After a stellar opening night that attracted a total of 108 racers to Dodge City Raceway Park this past Saturday night, the spotlight shifts to the IMCA Modifieds with Saturday night’s seventh Modified Stampede. Saturday’s card that will attract the top Modified contenders from throughout the area offers up a $1,000 winner’s share and Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth. Ponca City, Okla., native Brendon Gemmill reigns as the defending Stampede champion after making a late move to top last year’s event. It was his second Modified Stampede triumph after capturing his first win in 2014. Gemmill joined Woodward’s Cole Traugott and multi-time national champion David Murray Jr. as two-time winners of the event. Traugott reeled off back-to-back wins in 2016 and 2017 while Oberlin’s Murray swept both nights of the Inaugural event in 2013 before topping the 2015 edition as well. Test and tune is April 13, 14 at Crystal

CRYSTAL, Mich. – If it’s April, it’s the beginning of another race season at Crystal Motor Speedway. The annual test and tune sessions are set for Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14 from 2-5 p.m. and are open to any race machines. Admission will be $20 for the pits, but no charge to observe from the grandstands. The opening night of racing will be April 20 with IMCA Modifieds on the program for the 32nd consecutive season. Adult admission will be $12, kids ages 5-11 are $5 and pit passes are $30. IMCA RaceSaver Sprints join Saturday shows at I-90

HARTFORD, S.D. – A work day at the track and a barrage of phone calls from IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car drivers have owner and promoter Lyle Howey III convinced that quite a few folks in the Hartford area are excited about the re-opening of I-90 Speedway. The sanctioned Sprint division will return to IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing Saturday night programs this season at the South Dakota speedplant, idle for the past three years. The single Friday night date during the May 11-Sept. 7 point season is July 5. “There’s a lot of excitement that I-90 is opening back up,” said Howey, noting the hundred or so volunteers who showed up to help tear down the old bleachers last December. “I think the car count is going to be good for the Sprints. Merced RaceSaver checkers are career first for Champlin

MERCED, Calif. (April 6) – Grant Champlin had a pair of top four finishes to show for his first two Western RaceSaver Sprint Series outings of the season. He had his career first IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Series victory to show from his third, Saturday night at Merced Speedway. Champlin chased Grant Duinkerken most of the 30-lapper, gaining ground in traffic and finally taking the lead coming out of turn four with six circuits left. “All the tough guys were here tonight. There was no lack of talent,” said Champlin, who beat defending series champion Duinkerken to the checkers by four car lengths. “It’s good to get this win. Duke prevails in PASS feature at Port Royal

PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 6) – Ken Duke Jr. grabbed the lead from Nathan Gramley in turn two on lap 12 and went on to win Saturday’s 20-lap Pennsylvania Sprint Series feature at Port Royal Speedway. It was Duke’s second straight IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Series victory for 2019. The largest field in Central Pennsylvania Sprint Car racing so far this year, 43 cars, entered the race, and 25 of the 26 starters completed the distance. Entries came from as far away as Vermont and North Carolina. Late-charging Johnathan Jones got past Gramley with two laps to go and took second place. Gramley held on for third, followed by Nick Sweigart and Ryan Lynn. Wroten dominates in IMCA Hobby Stock opener at Maquoketa

The consensus was fast and tacky even at feature race time. Leah Wroten adjusted and ‘Mrs. Dominator’ did just that, dominated, en route to the 20-lap Shawn’s Auto Service IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature win. “This heavy track usually isn’t my style this late in the night,” Wroten said in Hoker Trucking Victory Lane. “But I was able to put the car anywhere I needed and it worked. I can’t thank everyone on the car enough. Rudolf is best in Bethany SportMod main

By Rick Staley BETHANY, Mo. (April 6) – Chase Rudolf has a Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature win to show for his first-ever visit to Bethany Speedway. R.J. Dishong used a front row starting position to take the lead and appear to be set for the Saturday win until a caution bunched the field back up. On the mid-race restart, Rudolf made a daring move on the high side of turn two to take the lead from Dishong. Rudolf gradually pulled away from the pack and captured the win. Jeffrey Sears moved to the inside of the track and claimed second with Randy Smith Jr. a solid third. Defending champion Josh Munsen was fourth and Colton Nelson battled back from an early race mishap to place fifth. Richards collects opening night Sprint checkers at US 36

By Jacob Blair OSBORN, Mo. (April 5) – US 36 Raceway roared back to life with the return of racing on Friday, April 5. The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars saw one of three defending champions earn their first win of 2019 as Matt Richards put together a wire-to-wire performance for the victory. Toby Chapman made it interesting in lapped traffic before Richards was able to pull away. Chapman finished second, Mike Houseman Jr. third, Mike Moore fourth and Kenny Potter fifth. Steven Bowers and Jeff James dueled back and forth in the closing laps of the IMCA Modified feature. Richard Spriggs led the early portion of the race before he faded in the closing stages. With Spriggs no longer pacing the field, James inherited the lead and brought Bowers with him to second. Bowers consistently put in faster laps and caught James around the five to go mark. Roach powered from fourth to score the Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMod checkers. Brandon Kenny ended in the runner-up position with Jarod Baird third, Robert Elliott fourth and Joe Adams fifth. Shaw advanced from his fifth starting position to outlast 10th -starting Austin Bonner in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event.
