A lap six caution slowed the field and when flagman Jamie Schirm waved the green it was Berry powering to the lead with Richie Gustin in tow. Berry had some challenges but stayed tough out front as he went on to the win. Already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Berry crossed the stripe ahead of Gustin with Cayden Carter third. Tim Ward was fourth and Shute fifth. Buck Schafroth cruised to the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers ahead of Dallon Murty and Damon Murty. ‘Nitro Nick’ nails Port Royal PASS feature

By Frank Buhrman PORT ROYAL, Pa. (June 20) – ‘Nitro’ Nick Sweigart made up for a couple of early season disappointments with a dominating wire-to-wire win in the 20-lap Pennsylvania Sprint Series feature Saturday at Port Royal Speedway. Sweigart took advantage of his pole start and put his IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car in victory lane for the first time in the late-starting 2020 season. The win was hardly a gimme, though. Last week’s Port Royal winner Garrett Bard, started 10th, got all the way to fourth on the opening lap, then took the runner-up spot on lap 11 and began to pressure Sweigart in lapped traffic during the caution-free race.  Sweigart responded, though, and was 1.5 seconds ahead at the checkered flag. Bard’s finish gave him two wins and two seconds in five PASS starts, plus a Laurel Highlands Sprint Series victory.  Dave Grube matched Bard’s charge, advancing from 11th starting spot to finish third, ahead of Larry McVay and Derek Hauck. The Penns Valley Meat Market Hard Charger Award went to sixth-finishing Doug Dodson, [Read More]

Siskiyou winners repeat in week two

By Ben Deatherage  YREKA, Calif. (June 20) – Saturday would be the second race of the 2020 season at Siskiyou Golden Speedway and both IMCA features saw repeat winners.  In the IMCA Modified feature, Paul Culp showed the way early.  Culp paced the field for the first handful of laps before getting passed by Travis Peery on lap six.  Peery, recently relocating to Yreka via Williston, N.D., had firm control of the top spot once in front.  He received a brief challenge around the 17th circuit by Riley Simmons, but the caution flag negated Simmons’ pass.  Peery held on the rest of the distance to capture his second straight victory at Siskiyou.  Simmons was the runner-up followed by Nick Trenchard, Culp and Duane Orsburn. Peery’s son Ryan got control of the point at the completion of the opening lap in the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature before tangling with another car.  Matt Sanders inherited the lead and blazed the trail until lap 11.  Braaten would then have a dominating performance while running in first.  The [Read More]

By Jim Haines HAGERSTOWN, Md. (June 20) – There was threatening weather in the skies overhead but the real thunder was on track as Dylan Shatzer sped to his second Virginia Sprint Series win of the year Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway. Tom Humphries and Scott Lutz paced the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green with Lutz going straight to the bottom and the front.  Shatzer, winner of the June 5 series lidlifter at Dixieland Speedway, had shown he liked the top and went straight to it for the lead on lap one. Lutz, Tom Humphries and Jerald Harris were on the chase until Humphries broke and coasted to the pits. On the restart, Harris took the high line to second and chased Shatzer with Lutz and Donny Hendershot racing for third.
