Bell will take next best step to IMCA Northern SportMod

MARCOLA, Ore. – Roger Bell will put another checkmark on his bucket list when the green flag flies for his Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod rookie campaign.  Bell ran a street stock at Willamette Speedway last year, earning top rookie honors and finishing sixth in points in his first-ever season on the track.  “I just decided life was too short, I wanted to do this. It’s a bucket list thing,” said Bell, 56 and who now works for the Forest Service after serving 13 years in the Navy. “I pretty much live in the Speedway Motors catalog. It’s like Christmas when the parts get delivered.” He sold his street stock and bought an old Modified chassis, found under a tree covered with leaves and originally built in the early 2000s by friend Dick Wright and Larry Follett, both long-time Modified drivers in the Pacific Northwest.  From last November to this February, Bell pored over the IMCA rules before building his own “old school” chassis in a 30×30 shop that’s understandably race-themed and the talk of the [Read More]

Frank goes retro for 2020 Mach-1 Sport Compact campaign

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Race fans with an appreciation for the local history of the sport will enjoy seeing Floyd Frank on track again in 2020. Frank’s Mach-1 Sport Compact has the retro look of the 1955 Chevrolet his father A.J. wrenched on as a crew member for a neighbor in the late 1960s and early 1970s. “We were at the track every Saturday night,” said Floyd, from Colorado Springs, Colo. “This car is a 2000 Acura Integra and it’s the first car I built myself. It took three months, which is longer than I thought it would. The only thing I stole from my old car was the roll bar.” His “old car” put Floyd in victory lane following six of his 21 starts last season. Coming off an eight-win campaign the year before, 2019 was arguably a better year when his El Paso County Raceway track and E3 Spark Plugs State championships are figured in. “We had a lot of opportunities to win last season,” said Floyd, who can laugh – now – [Read More]

FREEPORT, Ill. – A company that’s in the safety business every day has diversified its product line to support emergency personnel on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Hooker Harness has begun manufacturing fabric masks for the Stephenson County Health Department, for use by local Emergency Management Services.  “We’re happy to contribute to this any way its needed. We’re in the safety business every day,” noted company owner Scott McPhillips. “Everyone has to do what they can. People bring in extra material and we used several hundred yards of elastic that we had on hand.” In its sixth season of IMCA sponsorship, the Freeport, Ill., custom seatbelt and shoulder harness manufacturer has already completed several hundred masks. They are cleaned and sanitized at another location, then packaged and shipped to EMS departments.  “This has been a big change for us because most of what we do is heavy duty sewing,” McPhillips said. “Most of our staff brought in their personal sewing machines to work with the lighter materials.” With shortages of Personal Protective Equipment [Read More]

GLENDALE, Ariz. – His career first Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature win in hand, Clay Erickson can now sharpen his focus on chasing points. Erickson had recorded seven top five finishes in 13 starts before topping the March 7 main event at Canyon Speedway Park. He’d been the runner-up in two of the three outings that preceded that first-ever win. “We had gained a lot of confidence and knew we could run up there. It’s just been a matter of seat time and finishing races,” said Erickson, from Glendale and consistent throughout February’s Arizona Dirt Track Tour. “We’d come close a couple times and it was just a relief to win. We were finally able to finish.” “We were so happy. So many people who have supported us we’re there that night,” he added, “and everybody was excited.” Erickson’s father David had raced in a local stock class at Manzanita Speedway.
