Record 18 states, two provinces represented at 28th Kupper Chevrolet Dakota Classic Tour

MANDAN, N.D. – When they give out the next tourism awards in North Dakota, the Kupper Chevrolet Dakota Classic Tour should be a shoo-in. Drivers from 18 states and two Canadian provinces competed over the course of the July 8-13 tour, the biggest geographical representation in its 28-year history. “The exposure we get from IMCA and IMCATV has been very good. It really gets the word out,” said Tour Director John Gartner. “We had quite a few Texas drivers this year. They like being able to race every night for six straight nights.” “Some of our guys go down South and race in the winter so a lot of them were already friends,” he added. “We really enjoy when those drivers come up here.” Hunter Marriott and Elijah Zevenbergen both won three features in repeating as tour champions in the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sunoco Stock Car divisions, respectively. One hundred and twenty-five different Modified drivers competed over the course of the tour, 42 of them at all six events. Twenty-two of the 55 Stock [Read More]

Stephan joins another elite group with career 100th IMCA Modified win

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – Ricky Stephan started his IMCA Modified career 30-odd years ago at Park Jefferson Speedway. Fittingly, he returned there on July 8 to win his 100th feature in the division. “It’s really my home track and I was racing in front of my home fans,” Stephan said. “Plus, Pepsi of Siouxland sponsored the night and I’m a Pepsi guy.” “It was about time. I knew I was capable of doing it,” he continued. “Winning 100 features puts you in the history book. It’s an elite group.” While Stephan is the 50th driver in division history to reach 100 wins for his career, he’s got a resume full of equally impressive accomplishments. He earned his first of 16 career track championships, at Buena Vista Raceway, in his rookie 1987 season. He became just the ninth driver to win four track titles in a single season last year. Add in a couple Side Biter Chassis North Central Regional championships (2001 and 2003) and six Allstar Performance State championships – three in Iowa and a current [Read More]

Shouse wins URSS Wheatshocker crown

By Nick Schwien HAYS, Kan. (July 16) – A night earlier, Andy Shouse joked that he needed more laps around the dirt oval at RPM Speedway since he hadn’t raced at Hays for several years. Apparently, Shouse is a quick learner. On Sunday night, the defending IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car national champion walked away with the United Rebel Sprint Series victory and $2,000 in the ninth Wheatshocker Nationals. He also took home the Custom Pit Boss Smoker Grille presented by Lance Pittman of S&W Supply for being the high point driver of the Wheatshocker weekend. Shouse made a late charge en route to finishing second during Saturday night’s qualifier. On Sunday, he drew the fourth starting spot. “To be honest, we really just do our basic stuff,” Shouse said about being so fast at the 3/8-mile oval. “I think the big thing is we don’t really race at one race track all the time. We usually travel all over and see a lot of different places. I think that definitely helps us when we come [Read More]

Duffy exceeds expectations after late arrival for Modified Madness

By Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 14) – The driver who almost didn’t get to the track in time to qualify for Davenport Speedway’s IMCA Modified Madness 50 on Friday ended up winning it. Darin Duffy almost missed the event when eastbound traffic was slowed and then rerouted due to an accident on Interstate 80. After following the detour on a county road and through a couple towns, he arrived just in time to start last in the final “B” feature. “I was so close to turning around,” Duffy admitted. “When we finally got to the track, my guys got my car out of the trailer and I got my suit on quick. After I qualified, I thought if I could get up to fifth or so I’d be doing really good.” Starting 22nd in a field of 24, Duffy was all the way up to fourth when the caution flag flew on lap 25. 2015 race winner Tyler Droste took the lead from Jason Pershy on lap 28. Freedom 40 win worth $1,000 to Wood

By David Smith Jr. MEEKER, Okla. (July 14) – After surviving a mid-race battle for the lead, Joe Wood Jr. worked lapped traffic to perfection in the latter portion of the race to claim the Freedom 40 Sprint Series of Oklahoma feature at Red Dirt Raceway. Jake Martens opened a five-car length lead with 15 laps to go. Two laps later, Wood got a run coming out of turn four to take the front spot away on lap 27. Not even encountering slower cars on lap 32 could slow Wood’s pace as he went on to claim the half-stretch $1,000 victory, his second on the season and third career with the Smiley’s Racing Products-presented series. Martens held off Andy Shouse for the runner-up position while rookie Steven Shebester had his best performance of the season in fourth. Blake Dacus was fifth. Sheldon Barksdale led the first nine circuits and ended in sixth. Wood was scored first on a couple laps at midway before Martens regained the lead, then returned the favor for the $1,000 payday.
