Consistency, setups key in Eckrich’s run to IMCA Summer Series championship

OXFORD, Iowa – Team Eckrich can finally add a Deery Brothers Summer Series championship to its resume. 2010 series rookie of the year and 2011 runner-up Andy Eckrich raced to the IMCA Late Model tour crown, complementing a feature win at West Liberty Raceway with a trio of second-place outings. “We have been going for this. We ran consistently, we had good setups and we got it done,” Eckrich said. “My dad (Larry) is 74 and he’s had drivers win a lot of series and a lot of big races but never a Deery championship. He’s my car owner and mentor and has done a lot with drivers since the 1980s but one thing he never conquered was the Deery Series.” Eckrich, from Oxford, Iowa, gained the tour point lead for good with back-to-back second place finishes at Fayette County Speedway and Lee County Speedway. Time in shop puts Henderson on top of Wild West IMCA Stock Car Tour podium

DRAPER, Utah – Being the only repeat winner and staying consistent made Ed Henderson champion of the first annual Wild West Tour for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Being prepared when he got to the track made that title, and Sweetwater Speedway and E3 Spark Plugs Wyoming State crowns, possible. From Draper, Utah, Henderson won features at Diamond Mountain Speedway and Sweetwater and ran in the top five in six of nine tour starts. His season-long statistics show seven wins in 28 starts, at eight different tracks in six states. “I like to be ready when I get to the track. After change of plans, Williams corrals Red River IMCA Stock Car Tour crown

BONHAM, Texas – Gary Williams was better than good the first four nights and good enough on the last night of the Red River Tour for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Williams won two features, with second- and fourth-place finishes as well going into the finale at home track Southern Oklahoma Speedway. He started 17th that evening and was up to sixth before breaking a spindle bolt. Wobbly tire and all, Williams still managed to earn the tour title with a 14th place finish. “We weren’t even planning to run the whole tour. Then we won the first night out at Kennedale Speedway Park,” the Bonham, Texas, driver said. “We had been chasing some things and what we found worked. We knew we had a fast car.” How fast? Sniper Speed Lone Star Tour crown comes at start of Jeffrey Abbey’s stellar IMCA Stock Car season

COMANCHE, Texas – A first-time accomplishment in an already much accomplished dirt track career made Jeffrey Abbey champion of the Sniper Speed Lone Star Tour. Abbey won the final two IMCA Sunoco Stock Car features, held at 281 Speedway on the same day due to inclement weather. Each checkered was worth $750 while the tour title that accompanied the sweep paid $5,000. The Comanche, Texas, pilot had never won two features in the same division on the same day before. “We’d watched the tour last year. We were looking for some races to go to in February and the tour seemed like a good way to start the year.” He’d won both Stock Car features at Abilene Speedway’s Ice Breaker, the second show doing double duty as opening night for the tour. Gustin rewrites record book in topping Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour

GILMAN, Iowa – The winningest driver in the 10-year history of the Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour became its 10th different champion. Richie Gustin opened the IMCA Modified tour campaign with three straight feature wins and ended with a single-season record five victories. “There were a lot of things that worked out for us this year. We weren’t planning to run for the tour championship,” said Gustin, from Gilman, Iowa. “It had been scheduled to open in Fort Dodge and I didn’t know if I’d have been able to make it there that night because of work.” Rain moved opening night to Marshalltown Speedway, however, and Gustin clicked off wins there and the next two events, at Park Jefferson Speedway and at Hancock County Speedway. “Holding court at Marshalltown, which is my home track, was a big one,” Gustin said. “Park Jefferson was probably the coolest. Swift Springs renews IMCA rookie award program

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Top rookie drivers in five divisions earn product awards from Swift Springs again in 2020. The IMCA Modified, IMCA Late Model, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod and Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMod national rookies of the year all receive sets of four springs from the Chino Hills, Calif., manufacturer. Davis is golden in quests for IMCA state, Red River Modified Tour championships

EUNICE, N.M. – Cory Davis went on the road to win one championship. He raced closer to home to win another. The Eunice, N.M., topped point standings for the May 25-31 Red River IMCA Modified Tour, collecting the checkers at Heart O’ Texas Speedway and 281 Speedway and finishing no worse than seventh in five series starts. “I’d followed the tour last year and had raced at all of the tracks except Big O Speedway before. Winning is what we went out there for but I never expected to win back-to-back features,” he said. “Obviously, winning the tour championship meant a lot to us. Streaking DeVilbiss speeds to Wild West Modified Tour crown

FARMINGTON, N.M. – The stars aligned again this season for Zane DeVilbiss with the return of the Wild West Tour. DeVilbiss owned a dozen wins and a championship from the tour’s initial 2007-2014 run. He won seven of nine events, including a record six straight in capturing the 2019 IMCA Modified tour crown. “We won the tour in 2010 but I think we were a lot more prepared for a traveling series this year,” said DeVilbiss, from Farmington, N.M. “Everything worked in our favor. Shaw Race Cars renews IMCA Western Region support

BATESVILLE, Ark. – A familiar name in the chassis building business has renewed title sponsorship of IMCA’s Western Region for Modifieds. Shaw Race Cars, owned by Scott and Marlene Mosley in partnership with long-time IMCA Modified driver Jeff Taylor, provides a portion of the $6,000 point fund to be paid to top 10 drivers in 2020 point standings for the region. Vacation to Pacific Northwest ends with Chadwick’s 2nd Wild West Shootout title

OAKLEY, Calif. – Kellen Chadwick took his family on another June vacation to the Pacific Northwest and came home with a second Wild West IMCA Modified Shootout championship. Chadwick won two features and was runner-up in another four starts in eight northern California and Oregon tour starts. “This is kind of a cool event.
