Rhodes sprints to IMCA RaceSaver win at Winchester

By Jim Haines  WINCHESTER, Va. (April 29, 2023) – With most of the Eastern race tracks raining out, the return of IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars to Winchester brought a good field of sprinters to the Virginia oval co-sanctioned by the Virginia Sprint Series and Laurel Highlands Sprint Series.  Zach Rhodes topped the 24-car main event for his first win in the sanctioned division. Heats kicked off the night with Donnie Hendershot, A.J. Barton, Jarrett Rosencrance and Dave Grube taking wins. The feature lined up with Rhodes and Fred Arnold on the front row.  Rhodes had the best line at the start with Arnold dropping in for second right away, as the rest of the field tried to get their own line working to move forward. Rhodes liked the bottom and stayed glued to it with Arnold and Logan Jones fighting over second with the other positions changing every lap.  Jones made his way to second and Arnold fell to third with Donnie Hendershot and Dave Grube trying to run them down. Jones was all over [Read More]

Danley starts Eagle title defense with RaceSaver win

By Greg Soukup  EAGLE, Neb. (April 22, 2023) – Joey Danley began his IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car title defense with the checkers on a chilly 60th season opener at Eagle Raceway Saturday night. Danley started eighth, swapped the second and third spots early and made what proved to be the winning pass when he caught Trevor Grossenbacher for the lead on lap 11. “I got a really good start, getting up to I think fourth in the first couple of laps and just picked them off one by one after that,” Danley said. “The track held up great and ended up nice and wide for the feature. I had a real blast in the ‘A.’” Runner-up honors went to Stuart Snyder and Grossenbacher ended in third.  Jesse Sobbing borrowed Johnny Saathoff’s car, then parked the 96J in victory lane after winning the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature with a flag-to-flag run. Defending track, regional and national champion Jordan Grabouski was second and Chad Andersen took third.  Another driver with multiple Eagle titles on his resume was [Read More]

Spahr dominates for PASS win no. 2

By Frank Buhrman  MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (April 14, 2023) – It’s too early to crown Logan Spahr as king of the 2023 River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series season, but it might not be too early to start thinking about it. The Lewisberry racer turned in a dominating performance Friday at Williams Grove Speedway for his second straight IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car win of the new season – and a three-in-a-row record dating back to last October’s Keystone RaceSaver Challenge.  Spahr showed what his car could do when he recovered from an early spin in his heat race to come from the rear and finish second in a very competitive group. Then, starting fourth in the feature, he overtook Timmy Bittner in the third and fourth turns of the first lap for the lead. He never gave it up. The race was slowed by four cautions, none for major incidents. After the first three, Bittner attempted unsuccessfully to overtake the leader, and after the final yellow, Seth Schnoke gave it a try, with the same result. Schnoke had [Read More]

Leavell’s Natural Bridge success spans seasons

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (April 15, 2023) – The first Virginia Sprint Series race of the year showed that Joe Leavell had not lost his touch from his winning ways from last year at Natural Bridge Speedway.  The Waynesboro ace wasted no time going to the front in Friday night’s opener for the IMCA RaceSaver series and was on a rail to take the win. Leavell had been a double winner at Natural Bridge last season, getting the second of those victories in the 2022 tour finale. Daren Bolac and Caleb Harris paced the field to green this time around and Bolac and Harris stayed glued nose to tail until Harris moved to the front, running the higher line. Leavell went around Bolac and began working on Harris early on. The laps clicked away in the caution-free feature and nobody was going to prevent Leavell from going to the front.  The pack stayed in pursuit and kept him in sight but never made a challenge even in traffic as he cruised under the [Read More]
