BOONE, Iowa (Jun. 21, 2025) — Boone Speedway delivered a jam-packed doubleheader with 188 racecars in the pits for Farley Tire Smackdown and Hawkeye Challenge night. Rain had postponed the June 14 Smackdown program, setting up a rare two-show Saturday — and Jimmy Gustin stole the spotlight with a sweep of three feature victories across two classes.

In the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified makeup feature, Gustin jumped from the second row and never looked back. The veteran driver fended off strong runs by Greg Elliott and Trevor Fitz. It was Gustin’s first Modified win of 2025 in the Razor Chassis North Central Region.

Switching machines in the infield, Gustin returned for the makeup Sunoco IMCA Stock Car main and wheeled from seventh to the lead. Doug Smith and Devin Smith challenged lap after lap, but Gustin stood tall.

The Stock Car finale might have been the race of the night. Jeff Mueller led early with Jay Schmidt in pursuit, but Gustin charged from 12th to the lead as the laps wound down. Jake McBirnie then rocketed from 13th to engage Gustin in a nail-biting battle. The two traded the top spot in the final laps, with Gustin hanging on for his third win of the night, third in the Stock Cars at Boone this season, and his fourth of the campaign in the EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Region.

Second Modified Feature Showcases Lopez’s Early Speed

In the second IMCA Modified feature of the evening, Kaylin Lopez piloted the Zane Devilbiss no. 18Z to the front and led early. Matthew Meinecke and Corey Sauerman gave chase, with Izac Mallicoat and Jake McBirnie slicing through the field.

After a mid-race tangle between Paul Nagle and points leader Jeremy Mills sent Mills pit-side, the closing laps were a three-way shootout. Lopez held on to win over Sauerman and Meinecke for his first in the Razor Chassis North Central Region this year.

Sport Mod Showdowns Bring Drama and Variety

Two Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMod features delivered strong action. In the makeup race, Matt Avila came from 11th to pass his boss Jonathan Logue and check out for the win, his fourth of 2025. Randy Havlik and Cory Pestotnik completed the podium.

In the second program, Cam Reimers charged from the fifth row and engaged Mike Smith in a thrilling three-lap dogfight to the finish. Reimers edged out Smith, while Avila finished third. Reimers has five wins this year with four of them coming at “Iowa’s Action Track”

Mod Lite Division Splits to George and Gray

Ben George took the first Stealth Racing IMCA STARS Mod Lite feature of the night — the makeup race — after starting from the fourth row and outrunning Jaxon Carr in a mid-race battle. The win was George’s second of the season at two different tracks. Charlie Brown and Bryan Zehm completed the top three.

In the second program, Austin Gray charged from 10th to earn his third Boone win of 2025. Garrett Barber ran strong in second, with Zehm rounding out the podium.

Vanderwilt and Knutson Score Hobby Stock Wins

Cory Vanderwilt finally got the monkey off his back in the IMCA Hobby Stock makeup feature, scoring his first win of the year at Boone after a season full of near misses. The victory was his second of the season in the B&B Racing Chassis Northern Region. He held off Matt McDonald and Eric Knutson.

Knutson doubled down in the nightcap feature with his third win of the year at Boone — and in the region — outrunning a hard-charging Joe Doran. Solomon Bennett finished third.

Mike Smith Claims Overall in Hawkeye Challenge

The Hawkeye Challenge, featuring 24 drivers across six divisions, provided its usual blend of chaos and drama. A red flag for a crash between Sprint Car driver Brett Peterson and Modified pilot Kaylin Lopez delayed the start, but once the race went green, it was Mike Smith in his SportMod stealing the spotlight.

Smith passed both Johnathon Logue and Doug Smith on the final lap to earn the overall victory. Logue won the Stock Car portion and finished second overall, while Owen Carlson captured the Sprint Car class and finished third. Eric Knutson topped the Hobby Stocks, Charlie Brown led the Mod Lites, and Izac Mallicoat won the Modified portion.
