Ocean Speedway primed for 11th annual Pettit Shootout

WATSONVILLE, Calif. – IMCA Modifieds and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods headline both nights of Ocean Speedway’s 11th annual Pettit Shootout Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25. 

Modifieds race for $1,003 to win and a minimum of $103 to start on Friday, and for $3,006 to win and a minimum of $206 to start Saturday. Winners of both features become eligible to qualify for the 2022 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. 

SportMods race for $503 to win on Friday and $1,006 to win on Saturday.

Both divisions earn IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and KMJ Performance State points both nights; Modifieds also earn Shaw Race Cars Western Region points.

The pit gate opens at 10 a.m. and pill draw is from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. both days. The drivers’ meeting is at 2:45 p.m. with qualifying to follow at approximately 3:30 p.m. Pit passes are $55 each night or a two-day pass for $100.

Transponders and RACEceivers are required.

All drivers and fans are invited to join to kick-off the race weekend, bring their polished cars and show them off, and enjoy Carmona’s BBQ from 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Pettit prevails in Ocean IMCA Modified tilt

(Aug. 16, 2024) – Jim Pettit II moved closer to a third consecutive track championship in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified division Friday, during the Terry Traub Tribute program at Ocean Speedway. Austin Burke drove third to first on the opening salvo with Pettit going fourth to second as well. The first caution of the evening flew when Jacob Mallet, Jr. got sideways in turn three and was hit hard by Raymond Keldsen Jr. on lap four. Pettit stormed around Burke on the outside on the restart to lead lap five. Bobby Hogge drove into second as well. Hogge showed his nose in lapped traffic and drove up to Pettit’s bumper on a few occasions, but Pettit held court. Pettit took a one car length win ahead of Hogge, Andy Obertello, Cody Burke and Mallet.  Matthew Hagio earned his second win of the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod season when he grabbed Friday’s 20-lap event. Frazier dominates at Ocean

By Ben Deatherage  WATSONVILLE, Calif. (April 8, 2022) – Markus Frazier was the IMCA Northern SportMod winner as Ocean Speedway hosted another great night of racing action on Friday. After two attempts to get a lap in the books, Igor Gandzuk jumped out to the early race lead. However, Gandzuk was overtaken on lap five by Frazier, who set a quick pace while dealing with several restarts. Despite the stop-and-go action, Frazier cruised about the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds ¼-mile oval to win his first race of 2022. Ocean Speedway now has three different winners in three shows in the current season. Jim DiGiovanni was second over Adriane Frost. Gandzuk rallied from an early race spin to place fourth while fifth was Charlie Hunter.

Burke, Mead top IMCA features at Ocean

(May 31, 2024) – Ocean Speedway in Watsonville hosted a special Friday night show with Cody Burke and Jeff Mead earning exciting wins at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds dirt track. After a winless 2023 season, former track champion Burke prevailed for the second time in 2024 in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds. Robert Marsh jumped ahead of Burke to lead the opening lap of the 25-lap feature. Marsh built up a large lead before approaching lapped traffic. The caution flew for a spinning car in turn two. Burke marched towards Marsh on the restart and took the lead from car no. 22 on lap 22. Burke led the final three laps for victory followed by seventh-starting Bobby Hogge IV, Marsh, Austin Burke and Jim Pettit II. Jeff Mead led all 20 laps for the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod win. Emali VanHoff prevailed in a fast-paced race for second followed by 2023 track champion Chuck Golden, TJ Etchison and Brian Baggett.
