ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 17-18) – William Gould had planned to crew for teammate Matt Guillaume at Abilene Speedway’s season-opening Ice Breaker.
He borrowed an engine from Guillaume instead and raced to $700 IMCA Modified checkers Friday and Saturday night, upping his career win total in the division to 98.
“Normally when I go to Abilene I run up front or I break,” Gould said. “The track was fast both nights and the preferred lane was on the bottom.”
Gould started fourth on opening night and had the lead three circuits into the 20-lapper. Jeff James and Adam Armstrong tussled over second before James gained the runner-up spot for good. Defending track champion Fred Wojtek took fourth.
Night two saw Gould draw the pole and lead all 20 laps. Guillaume was second while Josh McGaha and Tyler Iverson completed the top four.
IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature winners were Michael Sheen and Westin Abbey.
Sheen’s Friday checkers came in front of Abbey, Kirk Martin and Charles Brewer. Abbey, the defending EQ Cylinder Heads Southern Region king, won on Saturday in front of Martin, Jason Adcock and Chad Hertel.
Opening night Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod honors went to Bradley Poor while Dustin Robinson showed the way across the stripe on Saturday.
Poor’s career fifth, and third in as many years Ice Breaker win came with Justin Shaw, Gabe Tucker and David Phillips in tow. Robinson led David Sanford, Lodi Mitchell and James Skinner in the next night’s top four.
Shannon Anderson scored IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock career win number 283 on Friday. His career sixth Ice Breaker victory was ahead of Damon Richards, Gerald Spalding Jr. and Rodney Sparks.
Saturday’s Hobby Stock winner was Greg Gilbert. Spalding, Richards and Sparks were second through fourth, respectively.
