Stock Car qualifying checkers fly for Mills, Schmidt

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – Checkers flew in Thursday’s first Stock Car qualifying features for Chris Mills and Jay Schmidt. Mills led every lap of the first IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey‘s qualifier rescheduled from Wednesday and Schmidt used the same formula in the second show. Top four finishers from both qualifiers advance to Saturday’s main event at Boone Speedway. Mills held off David Brandies following three late restarts. Shaun Bruns and defending champion Dustin Larson rounded out the top four in the opener. Schmidt saw a big lead erased near midway, then pulled away from 16th starting Derek Green, two-time champion Randy Brands and 18th starting Abe Huls. Schmidt makes the 13th main event start of his Super Nationals career on Saturday while Brands is in for the sixth time. Larson is a five-time qualifier, Huls is in for the fourth time, Bruns and Green each for the third. Mills ran third in his Saturday night debut last September. Brandies qualified for the first time. 1st qualifying feature – 1. Chris Mills, Sioux City; 2. David [Read More]

Another one for the record book: Aikey wins sixth Super Nationals crown

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – Even after 30-plus years in the sport, Jeff Aikey is still finding ways to make dirt track racing history. Aikey became the first driver to win six career IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s championships, running away with Thursday night’s Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model main event. The Boone Speedway victory came by a straightaway over Joel Callahan and paid $2,420, an amount that included the Speedway Motors Weekly Racing bonus. “This place just clicks for me. I just know how to get around here,” said Aikey, who passed Callahan for he lead following a lap 14 restart and stayed in front to the end of the 50-lapper. “Winning is getting better. The older you get, the better the wins get.” Thursday’s checkers also extended his Super Nationals record to four consecutive titles. Aikey has won 68 tour features and trails Tyler Bruening by a single point going into finale for the 30th annual series finale Sept. 23-24 at West Liberty Raceway. Van Genderen, Smith score Super Nationals qualifying wins

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – They both ended their night in victory lane, but IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s qualifying feature wins by Mike Van Genderen and Dylan Smith were anything but similar. Van Genderen ran away from everybody in winning the first Modified 25-lapper at Boone Speedway, negotiating heavy lapped traffic much of the way and then holding off Kelly Shryock following a late restart. The champion at Super Nationals in 2013, Smith was challenged by fellow Nebraskan Jordan Grabouski, who snuck ahead briefly on lap 19 before relinquishing the front spot the next time around. Top four finishers in each feature advance to the Saturday night main event. Scott Drake and Dean Abbey, brother of Super Nationals Southern SportMod champion Jeffrey Abbey, were scored next behind Van Genderen and Shryock. Hunter Marriott and Corey Dripps completed the top four in the second feature rescheduled from Wednesday because of inclement weather. John Logue and Ricky Thornton Jr. were disqualified from third and fifth place finishes, respectively, in the first qualifier after [Read More]

Short a cylinder, Dover has prayers answered in IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Nationals main event

By Greg Soukup EAGLE, Neb. (Sept. 4) – A record-setting IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Nationals ended with a familiar face in victory lane at Eagle Raceway. Jack Dover built up a big lead in Sunday’s 35-lap main event, then had just enough cylinders left to take the $2,500 victory ahead of Californian Blake Robertson. “We dropped a cylinder about 10 laps in and I could feel the car getting slower,” said Dover, also champion of the 2014 event. “The yellow came out with three laps to go and I was praying the motor would get me to the checkers.” A record 117 drivers from 15 states competed in the fourth annual Nationals and eight states were represented in the main event for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars on Sunday. Jason Martin, Andy Shouse and Tyler Drueke completed the top five. “It’s always fun to win an event like this twice,” said Dover. “Sprint Nationals is a very prestigious event. To get your name on the list of drivers who have won it is awesome.” Dover was [Read More]

Todd Stinehart and Tommy Belmer are the drivers of the Alive And Running Modifieds at Super Nationals

Todd Stinehart and Tommy Belmer are the drivers of the Alive And Running Modifieds at Super Nationals. Alive And Running was founded by Belmer’s brother Troy of Waterloo and Ryan Nesbit of Ankeny. Both grew up in Dunkerton where they lost a high school friend to suicide in 1991. “We started it in 2010 to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention,” Troy Belmer said Thursday morning. “We’ve had a ton of people come down and take pictures of the cars and share stories. The biggest thing we try to do is drive home the fact that you never know who’s hurting. There is so much stigma attached to mental illness.” While September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Alive And Running hosts a number of events throughout the year, notably a 5K run/walk in Dunkerton over Father’s Day Weekend. More than 1,000 people from across the country participate in the annual 5K. Alive And Running also started a support group that meets in Waverly once a month. More information is available at the www.aliveandrunningiowa.com website and on Facebook.

Car count nears record at Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 8) – Modifieds and Stock Cars fill the card for the first of two Thursday IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s programs at Boone Speedway. Two hundred and fifty-nine Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds and 191 IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars see heat race action. Those numbers bring the total car count to 872, just four shy of the Super Nationals record set last year. This is the ninth straight year that car counts have exceeded 800 at Super Nationals. Twenty Stock Car and 30 Modified heats set the stage for two qualifying features in both division. Each feature sends four drivers to the inside row of respective main events on Saturday. * Rookie Clay Money of Penokee, Kan., has had the Money Man nickname since his days in a go-kart but he’d trade that moniker for Main Event Qualifier. “With so many good drivers here, it would mean everything for me to make the show in my first year,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed Super Nationals so far. It’s something everyone needs to [Read More]
