Concelman does best driving getting to track, then gets 100th IMCA Northern SportMod win

AZTEC, N.M. (April 14, 2023) – After he did some of his best driving just to get to the track, Danny Concelman drove to his Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod career 100th feature win. Concelman made his first-ever start in New Mexico Friday night, racing to the landmark victory at Aztec Speedway. The checkers flew after the Commerce City pilot negotiated whiteout travel conditions while en route and going over Wolf Creek Pass, in Colorado’s rugged San Juan Mountains. “It’s pretty cool. This was something I had never thought about doing. I just race to win,” said Concelman, the first driver from Colorado and now the eighth in division history to reach triple digit wins. “I got a call from IMCA last year when we had around 92 or 93 wins. It was like ‘Whoa,’ so I knew we were getting close and then I got a bunch of wins late in the season.” “We refocused this year and after we got weathered out at North Platte last month, we stuck with our plans to race [Read More]

Spahr dominates for PASS win no. 2

By Frank Buhrman  MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (April 14, 2023) – It’s too early to crown Logan Spahr as king of the 2023 River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series season, but it might not be too early to start thinking about it. The Lewisberry racer turned in a dominating performance Friday at Williams Grove Speedway for his second straight IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car win of the new season – and a three-in-a-row record dating back to last October’s Keystone RaceSaver Challenge.  Spahr showed what his car could do when he recovered from an early spin in his heat race to come from the rear and finish second in a very competitive group. Then, starting fourth in the feature, he overtook Timmy Bittner in the third and fourth turns of the first lap for the lead. He never gave it up. The race was slowed by four cautions, none for major incidents. After the first three, Bittner attempted unsuccessfully to overtake the leader, and after the final yellow, Seth Schnoke gave it a try, with the same result. Schnoke had [Read More]

Leavell’s Natural Bridge success spans seasons

By Jim Haines NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (April 15, 2023) – The first Virginia Sprint Series race of the year showed that Joe Leavell had not lost his touch from his winning ways from last year at Natural Bridge Speedway.  The Waynesboro ace wasted no time going to the front in Friday night’s opener for the IMCA RaceSaver series and was on a rail to take the win. Leavell had been a double winner at Natural Bridge last season, getting the second of those victories in the 2022 tour finale. Daren Bolac and Caleb Harris paced the field to green this time around and Bolac and Harris stayed glued nose to tail until Harris moved to the front, running the higher line. Leavell went around Bolac and began working on Harris early on. The laps clicked away in the caution-free feature and nobody was going to prevent Leavell from going to the front.  The pack stayed in pursuit and kept him in sight but never made a challenge even in traffic as he cruised under the [Read More]

Greenwood wins biggest share of IMCA RaceSaver green at US 36

By Rick Staley  OSBORN, Mo. (April 14, 2023) – IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars attended from four different states, vying for the big money US 36 Raceway offered Friday night and the top check went home with Iowan Jake Greenwood.  At the drop of the green flag, Jacob Dye jumped to the front and appeared to have the car to beat before lapped traffic came into play and collected the leader, bringing his night to an end. Greenwood took the lead on the next restart and set a blistering pace, telling the other competitors “Catch me if  you can.”  Stu Snyder mounted a charge but could not match Greenwood as Tyler Drueke also moved toward the front. Greenwood never relinquished and pick up his first win on the high banks of US 36 Raceway, celebrating in Nextran Victory Lane. Snyder finished second and the always fast Drueke ended the feature in third. Stealth Racing IMCA STARS Mod Lites got their racing action started with Michael Raffurty leading the first part of the feature only to see Dillon [Read More]

CJ Speedway opens 2023 season with packed house

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (April 14, 2023) – The racing season at CJ Speedway opened Friday and 93 race teams competed in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd on a beautiful night for racing.   The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds took the green flag for their 20-lap main event with a strong field of 18 drivers taking the initial green flag. Steve Gustaf Sr. took the lead from the pole but his time at the front was short lived as Drew Janssen used the very fast high line of the track to take the lead.  Janssen went on to pick up the win but it was anything but easy as Jarrett Brown applied pressure late in the race as lapped traffic came into play. Chris Zogg held off Kurt Kile late as these two talented drivers finished second and third, respectively.   The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, branded as The Class Too Tough To Tame, proved once again that when they hit the track, hang on because there will be excitement.  Nathan Ballard drew the [Read More]

Abbey reigns at IMCA Stock Car King of the Highbanks

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (April 14, 2023) – Jeffrey Abbey can add another title on his already lengthy list of IMCA accomplishments. He’s now king of the King of the Highbanks. Abbey took the checkers in the Friday night main event for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars at Marshalltown Speedway and took a $5,000 check home to Texas.  He got the rich win, and a guaranteed starting spot in the B & B Racing Chassis All-Star Invitational, ahead of Dylan Thornton and Troy Jerovetz. Jim Horejsi, who had looked strong in Thursday qualifying, had started on the outside front row and sprang to the lead when the green flag dropped for the 50-lapper. Horejsi soon had the company of Dallon Murty and Thornton to contend with. Thornton found his way around on lap four, taking over the top spot. He continued to lead with 20 laps down, but by this time Abbey had worked his way from seventh into second place and began his quest to reel in the leader. Abbey worked his way methodically [Read More]

Feature wins to Ward, Olson and Dhondt as 10 IMCA Stock Cars lock in to King of the Highbanks

By Joyce Eisele  MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (April 13, 2023) – Night number one of the $5,000 to win King of the Highbanks for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars at Marshalltown Speedway is finally in the books, after five years of trying. Weather outs and the pandemic had not allowed even one night of the two-day show to be run but Thursday night, it happened!  Ten Stock Car drivers locked themselves in for their big 50-lap feature Friday night while Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods each ran a full show. The Northern SportMods ran 20 laps for their feature event, with a $500 payday. Tony Olson took command of the race on lap four, quickly moving to the top spot after starting ninth. Williams Grove, Path Valley highlight first PASS doubleheader of 2023

By Frank Buhrman WILLIAMS GROVE, Pa. (April 14, 2023) – The River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series heads into its first two-race weekend of its Silver Anniversary Season tonight (Friday) and Saturday with dates at one of its largest tracks, Williams Grove Speedway, and its smallest, Path Valley Speedway. It’s the ultimate test of IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car driver versatility. On Friday, PASS sprinters tackle the historic and lightning-fast Williams Grove oval as part of the track’s Spring Sprint Special and it will be a victory of sorts if the race is run. PASS’ early-season Grove race hasn’t happened since 2018, with rain cancelling activities last year and in 2019, cold weather prevailing in 2020, and the stoppage of public events due to the COVID outbreak wiping 2020 off the schedule. Those cancellations, plus departures of some past winners from the PASS ranks, mean that Austin Reed, last year’s points runner-up, is the only current driver to have won at the Grove in the last six years. He took the feature on Sept. 17 of [Read More]
