First in non-fendered voting goes to McGee’s Modified

GALESBURG, Ill. – No doubt readers of the Inside IMCA newsletter with good memories will remember Dean McGee as the winner of the November, 2009 best looking car contest. More recently, his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified was voted the top non-fendered entry in this month’s Sybesma Graphics IMCA Facebook Fan Favorite contest for August. He’ll receive a mini-mod door from Sybesma. Unfortunately, race fans at Davenport Speedway and 34 Raceway may not be seeing that car on the track this weekend. “The car is in pieces at the moment. I tangled with a lapped car and met the wall a week ago Saturday,” said McGee, who has taken advantage of the time away from the track to enjoy his grandchildren more. “I’m hoping to get the car ready but it was pretty well mashed.” The son of two-time Illinois state champion “Fibber” McGee, he started his career in 34’s super modified class in 1973. Burg tops fan voting for IMCA fendered divisions

ADEL, Iowa – The number of votes left little doubt that Andrew Burg has quite a fan following. Burg’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock was the top choice in August balloting for the Sybesma Graphics IMCA Facebook Fan Favorite contest. As a result, the 13-year-veteran will receive a mini-hood from contest sponsor Sybesma Graphics. “I’ve always raced a Hobby Stock. I’ve spent my entire career in that division,” said Burg, who finished fourth in points at Stuart, anticipates a similar finish at Boone and won a single feature at each track this season. “I like the cost of the class and being able to race with the best of the best. We race with a lot of the best drivers in the country every Saturday and Sunday of the season.” He shares a shop with Shannon Anderson, John Watson and Jamie Songer. “I started racing with my dad when I got out of the service. Sobbing is tops in Tipton XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 19) – And then there were nine. Jesse Sobbing became the ninth different winner in as many XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour events this season on Tuesday night at Cedar County Raceway. He bested a stellar field of 45 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds for the victory that paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Brad Diercks, 16th starting Brian Webb, Darin Duffy and Kyle Brown completed the top five. Steve Stewart drew the pole start and battled back and forth with Sobbing much of the first half in the 30-lapper. Stewart used the low line while Sobbing stayed on the high side, finally finding his way past near midway. Duffy then gave chase, also up top, while Diercks and Stewart contested for third. Two late cautions interrupted the action when Richie Gustin and Dustin Kraklio went off the top of the oval in the second set of turns. Kay is convincing in Deery Series feature win at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 19) – Justin Kay continues to do his best to take the suspense out of the Deery Brothers Summer Series points battle. Kay started on the pole and led every time around the track in winning Tuesday’s IMCA Late Model tour main event at Cedar County Raceway. The feature ran green to checkered and probably took less time than Kay will need to deposit his $3,000 check, the fourth he’s endorsed this season. Kyle Hinrichs ran second most of the way at Tipton and eventually crossed the stripe four car lengths behind Kay. Tyler Bruening pressured Hinrichs before ending in third. Brian Harris and Brian Beaudry completed the top five. Scott Fitzpatrick won the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing. IMCA Modified rear end rules announced for 2015

VINTON, Iowa – A quick change option will be new for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds beginning in 2015. “We feel we have taken steps in the right direction toward curtailing Modified engine costs. This quick change rule is also a good direction for the future of IMCA Modified racing and definitely one that many of our members have expressed their opinion over,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. “Nothing is mandatory or speced. We have tried to define an economical quick change option as best we can.” The new 2015 rule will read: 12. REAR END: Any steel approved OEM passenger car or truck rear end allowed (housing and carrier). OEM rear end must use steel spool (full or mini). Steel axle tube quick change allowed. Quick change must use 10” ring gear with aluminum or steel spool. Quick change must use minimum one inch wide spur gears and bolt on rear cover. Safety hubs (floater) allowed. Steel axles only. Ladner leads Arlington Sport Compacts

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Aug. 16) – Eric Ladner found victory lane for the first time this year in the Coors Light IMCA Sport Compact feature Saturday at Arlington Raceway. Joe Regner was the first leader of the race until he and another car encountered troubles in turn four, causing Regner to go off the top of the track and retire to the pit area. On the restart, Ladner took over the race and held off eventual runner-up Alan Lahr. Nate Coopman was third. Andy Timm got the lead following a restart and stayed in front to win the MN 93 IMCA Modified feature. Dan Mackenthun was the third and final leader in a near flawless Annihilator IMCA Stock Car feature. The 95.7 IMCA Sprint Car feature saw a red flag on the start of the race in turn one as five cars tried to make the turn at the same time and there wasn’t enough room. Gustin takes XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers at Benton County

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 18) – Richie Gustin raced to his career seventh XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature win on the night Tyler Droste nearly raced to his first. Gustin caught Droste with two circuits left in Monday’s 30-lapper for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, then pulled ahead to take the $1,000 checkers by four car lengths. He’s now the eighth different winner in as many tour events this season. Defending series champion Ronn Lauritzen, early leader Vern Jackson and Joe Docekal completed the top five. Jackson started outside the front row and led the first 19 laps. Droste had drawn the pole and wasn’t much more than half a car length off the pace much of that distance. Getting a good run out of the fourth turn, Droste took the lead on lap 20, right before a quick succession of three yellow flags. Gustin sped along the lower line. Reed makes SST history with 281 feature win

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Aug. 16) – Reagan Reed raced to a couple of firsts Saturday night at 281 Speedway. And she had to regain the lead from a former national champion to accomplish both feats. The 16-year-old junior-to-be at Waco’s Connally High School earned her career first IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car feature win at Stephenville. She became the first female driver to win a Sprint Series of Texas main event as well. “I couldn’t believe it,” admitted Reed. “I was excited for my dad and my crew and wished my brother (who was racing in Michigan) could have been there to see it.” Reed campaigned five seasons in the mini-sprints. She had just nine starts under her belt during her rookie Sprint Car season before getting the Saturday win. New tech inspection process for Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa – The long, pre-race tech inspection lines will be gone at the 32nd IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. They will be replaced by a system designed to keep the pit roads clear and minimize each driver’s time spent waiting in the tech line. Beginning Sunday, Aug. 31 through Wednesday, Sept. 1-3, drivers will be issued tech inspection sheets and inspection group cards on a first-come, first-served basis. After receiving their inspection sheets and cards, drivers will be called over the PA system to the lineup board for staging and then sent to the inspection area in groups. All cars must be inspected before competing and drivers are encouraged to go to the tech trailer and get their inspection sheets and cards as soon as they and their race cars arrive at the speedway. Limited inspections will be continued after racing begins and groups for that will be announced before racing starts. No cars will be inspected that do not have group cards. Scheffler scores at SpeedZone

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Aug. 15) – The first challenge on Saturday night at Oshkosh SpeedZone was to pare the 34-car Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modified field to 20 for the main event. Adam Reed made the front row and led the first two laps before Taylor Scheffler took the top sot away and started to pull away. A lap five caution quickly regrouped the field but Scheffler again pulled away, leaving the race for second. Josh Zdroik ended a five-lap battle with Reed, moving into second on lap nine before the final caution for a tire on the track slowed the race on lap 10. Scheffler had the field on his rear bumper, but again, was able to pull away on the restart. Zdroik, Tim Robbiins, Mike Klenz, Eddie Muenster and point leader, Sean Jerovetz were in line.
