Cruz Birkhofer Scores First Career Win at Davenport’s Sheet Metal Showdown

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Jun. 21, 2025) — Cruz Birkhofer claimed his first career Sunoco IMCA Late Model feature win Saturday night during the Sheet Metal Showdown at Davenport Speedway, earning a $2,000 payday in the process.

Starting on the outside of the front row, Birkhofer committed to the high side and never looked back, leading every circuit of the main event. At the finish, he held a half-second advantage over Andy Nezworski.

Nezworski, who started fourth, had to work past Chase Brunscheen to take over second. He managed to close to within a car length of Birkhofer in the closing laps, but couldn’t get close enough to challenge for the lead. Logan Veloz finished third after rolling off fifth.

Carter charges from 12th to SportMod Win

Brayton Carter picked up the $2,000 Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMod win in thrilling fashion. Josh Starr set the early pace after starting on the front row and led until a lap 12 caution bunched up the field.

On the restart, Dylan VanWyk powered to the front and led the next 11 circuits. Carter, who started 12th, wasted no time charging into the top five and methodically picked off the leaders one by one. He finally grabbed the top spot on lap 23 and led the final three laps to secure his 18th SportMod win of the season and first at Davenport in 2025.

VanWyk settled for second while Cole Suckow, a fixture in the top five throughout the feature, finished third.

Wauters Goes Wire-to-Wire in Hobby Stock Main

Daniel Wauters dominated the Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stock feature, leading from the start and holding off a hard-charging Kile Vohringer for the $2,000 win. The victory was Wauters’ fifth of the season in the B&B Racing Chassis Northern Region and his fourth at Davenport.

Vohringer crossed the line second, with Matt Bennett rounding out the podium in third.

Veloz Sweeps Modified Main

Logan Veloz led all 20 laps of the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature, holding off pressure from both Kurt Kile and Chris Zogg. Zogg would finish second, and Ben Chapman, who started eighth, advanced to take third.

The win marked Veloz’s second Modified victory of the season in the Razor Chassis North Central Region and his first at Davenport in 2025.

Kay rallies for Davenport Modified win 

By Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 4) – Justin Kay raced from the back of the field to the checkers Friday at Davenport Speedway. Six  Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds, one of them six driven by Kay, were involved in a first-lap inci­dent. Kay restarted at the tail of the field but several cautions later, took the lead after a lap 12 re­start. Kay led the remainder of the race to take victory. Kurt Kile worked his way to a second place finish. The Hawkeye Auto IMCA Northern SportMods saw a number of early yellows, however there would be no pass for the lead. Keith Blum started on the front row and survived all the restarts to score the victory. Jared Waterman finished second.

Rescheduled Sunoco Bonus nights next at Davenport, 34

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Aug. 16, 2023) – A pair of Sunoco Race Fuels bonus nights rained out earlier this month are on the IMC Late Model schedule for the upcoming weekend. The division title sponsor awards $250 bonuses to feature winners Friday, Aug. 18 at Davenport Speedway and Saturday, Aug. 19 at 34 Raceway in West Burlington. Drivers can receive the bonus one time in a season so the $250 would be given to the top finishing non-winning driver either night, if the winner has already earned the bonus at another track. Friday’s season championship night show at Davenport also features Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods, along with the Ryan McDermott Memorial Race for the local 4-cylinder class. Corn State Nationals outing yields $5,000 payday for Fitz

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Sept. 14, 2024) – Trevor Fitz had himself quite a night Saturday at Davenport Speedway’s Corn State Nationals. The California native made his first-ever visit to Davenport, a track he says is pretty different than any other he’s been to, winning the Saturday night Corn State Nationals feature for Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds and $5,000. “It was awesome. I met a lot of good people there and made a lot of friends,” Fitz said following the career-best payday. “I always like doing that, and the money was good.” Now eligible to qualify for the 2025 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational, Fitz was driver and sole crew member until some buddies in two to watch Late Models pitched in and helped him with the car.
