Larson teaches high side clinic in Shawano’s Fury at the Fairgrounds

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (June 26) – Jeff Larson was the first car to hit the track for hot laps Saturday at Shawano Speedway and it paid dividends for the Illinois racer. Larson won the third leg of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Cheesehead Triple Crown and left the track with $5,000, a huge trophy thanks to the Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy Tour and a spot on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Larson and Jerry Wilinski raced wheel-to-wheel following the initial green with Wilinski holding the slightest of leads. Wilinski continued to lead as Larson ran right near the wall trying to gain an advantage.  What would be the final caution of the 30-lap feature flew after lap five. As the race went back to green, Larson again tiptoed along the wall and took the lead from Wilinski. Larson then put on a clinic on how to race inches away from the wall as Wilinski battled Kelly Shryock for second and Konnor Wilinski, Jerry’s son, battled with Jay Noteboom for fourth. [Read More]

Kirchoff masters traffic in Interstate Challenge Series opener

By Dru Brown BILLINGS, Mont. (June 25) – Eddie Kirchoff’s mastery of lapped traffic helped make him the opening night winner in the Interstate Challenge Series. Kirchoff outran Tripp Gaylord and Kenny Baumann Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park, earning $1,000 for his Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory. The evening’s 25-lapper featured some of the best Modified drivers in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region and right as the green flag came out, the race for the lead was three wide. Kirchoff took the point on the low line.  Baumann wanted none of that, however, fought back on the high line and took the lead. The game of leapfrog had begun as Kirchoff stayed steady on the bottom, looked low and stole the lead back. Gaylord, meanwhile, was running third and catching up to the two frontrunners. Kirchoff began building a sizeable lead. Gaylord and Baumann swapped the second spot back and forth, but Gaylord proved to be too strong and took the runner up position. By this time, Kirchoff was in heavy lapped traffic [Read More]

Marriott checks out on Modified foes in Cheesehead feature at Oshkosh

By Dave Panske OSHKOSH, Wis. (June 24) – Once Hunter Marriott took the green, the battle was for second Friday at Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway. Marriott checked out on the rest of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds in topping the $5,000 to win main event at The Battle at the Zone, the second leg of the Cheesehead Triple Crown. Seventy-four Modifieds vied and total car count for the night was a whopping 163. Steve Schneider and Marriott sat on the front row and Marriott grabbed the lead at the start and immediately started to open a lead on the field. Kelly Shyrock pulled behind Schneider in third with Brian Mullen, Thursday night Clash at the Creek winner, Benji LaCrosse and Brian Drexler behind. The race was fast and clean with Marriott increasing his lead and plenty of tight racing behind. What proved to be the lone caution appeared on lap 25 and bunched the field on Marriott. The restart showed much the same as Marriott, already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, powered ahead once [Read More]

LaCrosse earns $10,000 for career second Clash at the Creek checkers

By Greg Aregoni FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (June 23) – Benji LaCrosse led every lap of the 50 lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Clash at the Creek main event Thursday at 141 Speedway. LaCrosse held off heavy pressure from two-time defending race winner Mike Mullen to take home the $10,000 payday in the opening installment of the Cheesehead Triple Crown. LaCrosse earned the pole position for the feature by virtue of passing points during Wednesday qualifying. The 2013 Clash winner showed he was going to be a threat as he pulled away from the field immediately. Mullen settled into position in second and Kyle Brown into third, with a whole crew running right behind. Several cautions kept the field together like a close knit family. On each restart, LaCrosse pulled Mullen around the speedway and eventually edged away from the field. Shawn Kilgore and Hunter Marriott battled for third during the middle portion of the race. Kilgore ran the top with Marriott down low. With 15 circuits remaining, LaCrosse entered lapped traffic and Mullen was able [Read More]

Late restart opens door for Logue at SportMod Nationals

BRITT, Iowa (June 22) – A race he didn’t win last August helped put Johnathon Logue in victory lane at Hancock County Speedway. His runner-up finish during the Night of 10,000 Stars show at Britt was on Logue’s mind at the start of Tuesday’s MaxYield Seed SportMod Nationals. Remembering how George Nordman used the lower groove to get the best of him before at Britt, Logue followed the same line from 13th starting to the $2,500 checkers. The victory was his fourth of the season and, surprisingly, his Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod career first away from his hometown Boone Speedway. “My crew has put a lot of sweat and blood and work into this car,” Logue said. “This win got the weight off my shoulders.” He passed Jared Boumeester for the lead following a caution with five circuits left in the 30-lapper. “I’m not sure why no one else tried to run the bottom. Once I got to the 81 (Boumeester) I showed him my line and the yellow came out. I didn’t know if I’d [Read More]

Theme for Super Nationals best looking car contest is ‘Represent Your State’

BOONE, Iowa – Proud of where you call home? Heck yes, and IMCA is giving you the chance to prove it during the upcoming IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. “This year’s contest is open to drivers in all seven divisions competing at Boone Speedway and trophies will be awarded in the four divisions that crown champions on Saturday night,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. “We encourage all Super Nationals competitors to be as creative as they can with their home state representation, while making sure required decals are in the correct location on their car.” The same theme was used in choosing best looking entries at the Duel In the Desert last fall. “We wanted to make this announcement now so drivers can start making plans with their graphics company,” Yoder said. “If they let us know in advance, we can make sure announcers identify them during hot laps, for example.”

BOONE, Iowa – Another 46 pit stalls have been designated as reserved for the Sept. 5-10 IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Stalls in Section JJ (along the fence in the north field, next to Manufacturers’ Row) and Section II (in the south pit area) are all on grass, 12 feet wide and 100 feet long. “We have reserved areas where the longer haulers absolutely need to be in,” IMCA President Brett Root said. “We have reconfigured the south pit area in order to accommodate the longer haulers and will do our best to keep them out of the roadways during the event.” Stalls in Section HH (north of turn 3) are 60 feet long, also grass and also newly designated as reserved, meaning all stalls in the main pit area will be reserved. The new pit overflow area near the cell tower area has been designated for divisions with one-day programs … the Southern SportMods on Monday, Sport Compacts on Tuesday and Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models on Thursday. “Both pre-entry [Read More]
