Lagroon denies Schrader at Salina Speedway

By Dusty Wiegert SALINA, Kan. (May 6) – For most of the feature event Friday night at Salina Speedway in the Long McArthur IMCA Modified division, it looked as if NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader would notch his first win at the track. But he was inevitably denied with only a handful of laps left as Salina’s Corey Lagroon snuck past and powered away for the victory, his first of the season. The $1,000 victory put Lagroon on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Schrader, who started from the pole after a lucky pill draw by one of the speedway’s younger fans, pushed up the track exiting turn three, allowing Lagroon the room to get by as he got the car to stick on the bottom side. Schrader finished second with Tyler Frye and Danny Morrison rounding out the top four. Chad Sterling drove to a big win in the Coors Light IMCA Stock Car division. Defending champion Arnold Williams returned to finish second with Tanner Portenier and Scot Granzella following. Dakota Sproul got [Read More]

Petersilie drew the pole for the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event and had to regain the front spot from Kevin Sustaire late in a contest that ran caution-free all 20 laps. The $1,000 checkers, the top win money-wise of Petersilie’s 17 seasons on the track, put him on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Sustaire, Clay Sellard, 11th starting Cole Traugott and Ken Schrader rounded out the top five. William Gould started behind Petersilie and ended in sixth while Kenny Wallace was seventh. “It was a neat accomplishment on a dry slick track,” Petersilie said. “It feels good to be able to win a race like this. While it’s easier to do from the pole, you still have to stay in front of that caliber [Read More]

Martens holds off Wood for Sprint Series of Oklahoma victory at Brill

By David Smith Jr. MEEKER, Okla. (April 23) – Jake Martens took the lead at the start and then held off a hard-charging Joe Wood Jr. to capture his first Sprint Series of Oklahoma IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car victory of the season at Brill Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Martens started on the pole for the 20-lap feature and quickly jumped out front as Andy Shouse and Sterling Hoff battled for second. Martens opened a half-stretch advantage before reaching slower cars on lap seven. The fifth starting Wood had worked his way past Shouse for third on lap five and on lap eight passed Hoff. The first and only caution fell on lap 12. Martens got the jump on Wood on the ensuing restart and opened a five car length lead. Martens approached slower cars on lap 18, which allowed Wood to cut his deficit down to three car lengths. Heading down the backstretch on the final lap, Wood got a run on Martens coming out of turn four but the leader held on [Read More]
