Norton, Roath collect $1,000 wins at Canyon’s Shootout special

PEORIA, Ariz. (Sept. 1-2) – Holiday weekend Shootout feature wins at Canyon Speedway Park put Guy Norton and Ryan Roath on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational bal­lot.

Norton scored the $1,000 IMCA Modified checkers Saturday at Canyon while Roath took home the same amount for the Sunday checkers.

Norton and Roath tussled on opening night before finishing 1-2. John Parmeley led early before tangling with a lapped car; Chaz Baca borrowed a car from Jeff Stafford Sr. and led to lap 18, when brake issues took him out of contention.

Bill Miller rounded out the top three.

Parmeley again led early on Saturday while the ninth starting Roath worked his way up to se­cond.

Roath gained and then lost the lead to Jay Foster, who broke on the 19th circuit. Roath went on to the win head of Parmeley and Baca, back in the car he’d race at the IMCA Speedway Motors Su­per Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

George Fronsman swept the weekend’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car features, in front of Baca and Ty Warner on Saturday and Cody Center and Ty Warner on Sunday.

Joe Vlasity led Chucky Thornton and Merle Zachrison across the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock stripe on opening night. Josh Cordova bounced back big time to win on Sunday, with Jimmy Davy and Bradley Stafford in tow.

Winter Challenge Series starts this weekend at Canyon

PEORIA, Ariz. – The first three of six Winter Challenge Series dates are this weekend at Canyon Speedway Park. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds run in $1,000 to win, minimum $100 to start features on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24-26. The same purse is at stake during Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows Jan. 30-Feb. 1. All six Peoria features are Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying events. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing national, Larry Shaw Racing Western Region, All-star Performance Arizona State and special series points will be awarded. An open practice is from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. for the Thursday and Friday shows. Gates open at 3 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday programs.
