Ashton Thompson: Turning Laps for a Cause

By Ben Deatherage SALEM, Ind. (Oct. 3, 2025) — In the rolling hills of southern Indiana, where small towns dot the countryside and history runs deep, sits Salem. It has become a crossroads town with a courthouse square at its heart and strengthened by generations who rebuilt after every setback. Today, its brick streets and quiet neighborhoods still reflect that heritage of resilience. From this backdrop rises Ashton Thompson’s story — a third-generation racer who has carried her family’s tradition further than ever, chasing speed across the Midwest and now carving her path in the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Car division with the Huntley’s Hoosier Winged Sprint Series. A Family Affair “I’m a third-generation racer,” Thompson said with a grin. “My dad told me I had to play a sport when I was six, and I chose racing. We kept it in the family.” Her father, Tyson, and grandfather, Gerald, both ran Mini Sprints on the local scene. Ashton went further, climbing from quarter midgets into Micro Sprints, Midgets, and even developmental series on pavement and road [Read More]

Teenager Baldwin Wins Kevin Huntley Memorial in Thriller at Bloomington

By Pat Sullivan BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Sept. 5, 2025) — With a top prize of $10,000 up for grabs, the Kevin Huntley Memorial at Indiana’s Bloomington Speedway is, by definition, one of the most prestigious races on the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Car calendar. Yet, the significance of the event goes well beyond the hefty purse. Huntley, known in the racing world as “The Pup,” cut his teeth at Bloomington Speedway, where he was the track champion in 1986. The 4th annual Kevin Huntley Memorial was the most highly anticipated edition of the annual race to date. With Mother Nature interceding in July, the tilt was pushed back to Sept. 5, when 37 cars signed in, representing eight different states and the United Kingdom. Rod Henning and Whit Gastineau occupied the front row of the 30-lap feature, with Dillan Baldwin and Ashton Thompson next in line. Henning got the jump when the green flag fell and built a comfortable margin in the opening stages of the race, with Gastineau in hot pursuit. Henning later headed to the work [Read More]

Ryan Tusing Goes Elbows Up to win at Bloomington

By Zack Pauley BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (May 9, 2025) — On a beautiful night in southern Indiana, the Huntley’s Winged Hoosier Sprint Series saw 26 RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars check in to try and tame the historic Bloomington Speedway. The theme of the night was Pink Out which was sponsored by iWIN. The Indiana Women in Need group sponsors driver Ashton Thompson and supports individuals across the state that are receiving treatment for breast cancer. The track had an immense amount of character come feature time which made it tricky to navigate for the drivers. Jeff Wimmenauer would jump out to a quick lead and set the pace through the opening fifteen laps. After a caution for a spinning car tightened the field back up, Ryan Tusing set his sights on the leader and would not be denied. Blake Sholders would take a tumble in turn one resulting in a red flag. On the restart that followed the stoppage Tusing would make the pass for the lead and the win to pick up his first victory of [Read More]

Thomas Wins a Thriller at Lincoln Park

By Zack Pauley PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (Apr. 11, 2025) – The feature event saw Ethan Barrow, the defending state champion, jump out to the early lead in the season opener for the Huntley’s Hoosier Winged Sprints at Lincoln Park Speedway. A couple of early cautions included Ryan Tusing’s slowing, who had previously flipped in his heat race, and a spin from Blake Sholders. The lone red flag of the race came when Tres Mehler flipped his machine on the bottom of the track in between turns three and four. While Ethan Barrow ripped the top of the track and picked off lapped cars, a war was being waged behind him. Jack Thomas from Bates City, Missouri, and Jordan Welch were blazing through the field trying to catch the leader. Thomas was penalized two spots after a late race caution for jumping a spot earlier on a restart, but it would not deter him from quickly getting back to second place with his eye on Barrow. In what could be described as a heavyweight fight, Barrow and Thomas [Read More]

Huntley’s Hoosier Winged Sprint Series Set to Honor Bloomington Legend

By Ben Deatherage VINTON, Iowa (Apr. 8, 2025) — The newly rebranded Huntley’s Hoosier Winged Sprint Series is set to launch its 2025 campaign this Friday, April 11th, at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville. The 27-race slate will span some of Indiana’s most iconic dirt tracks in tribute to the late Kevin Huntley—a Bloomington native, fan favorite, and racing legend affectionately known as “The Pup.”. The series, now bearing Huntley’s name for the first time, celebrates the deep tradition of Sprint Car racing across the Hoosier State. The tour will visit Lawrenceburg, Paragon, Bloomington, and Kokomo Speedways, as well as Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt and Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis. According to renowned racing historian Dr. Pat Sullivan, Kevin Huntley was a beloved figure in Indiana’s rich Sprint Car tradition—respected by fans, competitors, and the racing community alike. “There were all these great Sprint Car racers that came out of Bloomington around the same time, and Kevin was absolutely one of them,” Sullivan said. “He was a native son—someone everyone knew and liked. It was terrible [Read More]
